So my "little" Jeep is in the shop getting a rear 4 link done and I got to thinking it might be necessary to tow it around after thrashing it on the trails. I've been looking at used F350s and then I stumbled on to this: a 1976 J10 with a 401 (http://lasvegas.craigslist.org/cto/1505815885.html). I was able to take a look at it today for a minute, with a longer look and a drive this saturday.

I'd use it for mainly towing the '06 LJ on a 2 axle trailer... What do you guys think<

Honestly, I would not do it if you are planing to take long trips. You should get the newer F350. That power stroke will go forever.

Power won't be an issue with the 401. Only thing I'd worry about is the somewhat light J10 frame pulling it. Would be better off with a J20. Not a big ford fan so I won't even comment on the powersmoke.

the j10 would be plenty good enough for pulling the lj. i do alot of towing with a unibody xj with no problems but like pablo_max said the f350 would be better with long trips. it would have a better ride and be a more dependable rig for towing it is a little over kill for just a lj a 250 would be plenty even.

It seems to be the auto TH400 with the QuadraTrac..... as the posting said, it has hubs so it is not in 4WD all the time. check to see if the chain was replaced or a part time kit installed.
What gearing ratio.... fortunately a 3.54 and not a 3.07, 3.31 is ok for towing, the brakes may be your biggest challenge. I have towed with an 85Gwag w 3.31 and it was a bit tough on the uphill.... pulling another wagoneer...... so 4600lbs was stretching it.... but there was no brakes for emergency stop on steep downhill when I tried to test the stopping distance.....

Also towing in the summer and no A/C.... you will feell the cab warming up to the heated TH400..... even with a trany cooler, at this point you could route the cooling hoses to the trany cooler only and bypass the radiator.

I'd say buy one based on which is the better vehicle for what you intend to do, not based on what you "like", IE a Jeep. I like Jeeps too (obviously) but when I think about something to tow with for the most part they don't even enter my mind. Not if I want something I'd be comfortable to use cross country. For that I've got a V10 superduty with power everything, modern technology (which includes nice chilly functional AC), and low miles. If I have to tow something and need to take the Brood along I have a V10 Excursion. Pretty much the same thing as the Superduty just with a different skin. I'd wager either one would drag the above 4-sale J10 backwards around Vegas and do it in comfort, and better fuel mileage. :) My .02 anyway.

If you are mechanically inclined, go for J truck. If not, go for a newer F350 truck.

Just get one of these to haul your baby Jeeps around.

Thanks guys... I'm leaning toward an F350 - mainly for the diesel and comfort parts of the equation. The J10 popped up on my radar because the price is doable. Just because it's a decent price doesn't make it a decent tow rig.
