Well AMC engine, post 71, post mount springs pre 74,
best guess 72->73 somewhere in there.

I am sticking wiht 71, my J4000 had
post springs - check
AMC V8 - check (edit - never seen a V9 lol)
razor grill - check (best as I can tell)
spring over front and rear - check
angle battery - soft check (IIRC)
round tail lights - check
gas filler with no recess - check
brow - CHECK!
large rear window - check
D20 t-case - check
4 wheel drum - check
dash for either hand drive - check

in question - tire carrier, mom took out a tree stump when I was 4 and it was never seen again, I remeber I would sit under there when my parents were moving cattle and I was suppose to go somplace safe - not sure why I didn't get in the cab...
mirrors - I remeber the stock mirrors it had were like something off a car, dad put farm store tripods on it.

It's a 72. Last year for the original dash, and first for the diagonal tire carrier.

This cutaway poster not dated either.

I concur that 72 was first year of diagonal tire carrier.

I looked thru some of my brochures and data books but don't have any that show tripod mirrors from early 70's.

So this is earliest factory photo of tripod mirrors that I have seen.

I wanna say '72, but I have one and I have 5 lug axles. Also, the tailgate on a '72 should still have hook and chain straps, so there should be a tab on the inside of the tailgate, but that's not shown. Front and rear spring over is definately 73 or earlier, right? So I'm gonna have to go with a 72 1/2
