this is the convertor I used in mine - it is known as the "RV 400" convertor or from its actual application as the Alison 540, it has all the features that make a good convertor good - brazed turbine and impeller, dual bearings etc, etc
CLICK HERE (http://www.bulkpart.com/cgi-bin/miva?Merchant2/merchant.mv+Screen=PROD&Product_Code=PP3580&Category_Code=400ptc)
its a little pricey but well worth it - search the site for more options

I have the same trans in my 73 J4000 and had no problem getting a torque converter. If the local "chain" part stores can't locate it, go to a tranny shop and they should be able to set you up. BTW, how are you going to deal with the difference in passenger side vs. driver side drop to the axles. All TH400 were used with xfer cases that had a passenger side drop. Your 83 Wag should have driver side drop axles unless they were swapped.

You know you will need a different Flex Plate and a torque converter hub spacer that needs to be pressed into the end of the crank..........Right? Good luck. ;)
