I loosend the distributor clamp bolt to advance the distibutor a bit. When I tightend down the bolt I got a rattleing noise coming from the water pump/distributor area.

When I loosend the bolt it would stop. Tightend it down again and it would do it again.

At idle it eventually will quiet itself.

It does it with the dist. in advanced or retarded positions.

It seems intermitent when driving, but generally will always do it when it's cold and when you quickly romp on the gas. What the hay is this????

Thanks...........AGAIN!!!!! :D

sounds like its time for a rebuilt dist the bushing in your dist are most likley worn out and the rotor and mech advance are doing the hoochie coochie

Not worth the trouble of doing it yourself, rebuilt is around 45.00 to 50.00 exchange. The parts to do it yourself are more than that.

Called the parts store last night. They said a rebuilt Motorcraft dizz would be $84 with the exchange. I aked him for a rebuild kit, he said they dont seel them. Seems if Im going to spend $84 bucks, I should put it toward an upgraded one.

How much play in the shaft should there be? I can wiggle the shaft with the rotor a bit but doesnt seem excessive. It will turn a 1/4" each way before I feel the spring tension. And it does have some up/down play.

Another question. If i have slop in the distributor, Im assuming a rough idle would result, right? I do have a little lobing at idle that I havent been able to cure with adj. the timing or the choke/mixture screws.

Any more ideas, Im open to them. smile.gif :(

One thing I overlooked when putting in a new distirbuotr is adjusting the vacuum advance. It if comes with a new vacuum advance, don't forget to adjust it. If you use the old advacne, adjustment should not be necessary.
