Not as in snooty, but as in stuck in place in the "up" position. I was fiddling with things the last time I had the tailgate down, and I think I bent the safety switch (little hook-looking jobber) out too far. So what now? Any hints on how I can bypass this switch and lower my rear window? It may be October, but it's still 90 in Montgomery and I don't have A/C. I miss my crossflow! TIA.

hhhmmmmm...I don't think it can be bypassed if the tailgate is shut......unless you remove the big access panel, reach up to the top and remove the connector that is attached to the safety switch and jump the 2 terminals with a wire and....voila! you are done!
good luck!

Coat hanger! I just checked mine and you can hook the safety switch arm pretty easily (you can see mine through the crack on the left side) and pull back.

Hey, I looked up that part number and it was for an "antenna, universal replacement" and crossed reffed as a "muffler hanger, right side". Please double check those numbers. I was very disappointed when I ordered some sealant and received a roll of duct tape instead. http://www.cs.colostate.edu/~zeimet/ubb/smile.gif
You can bypass the safety switch in the tailgate, also the rear switch as well. You need to open the access panel for both of these.

Sorry, that part is actually out of production and you will have to find an aftermarket substitute. I think J.C. Whitney has them listed under "keyless entry kit" for $19.95. Probably only fits Fords and GMs though. http://www.cs.colostate.edu/~zeimet/ubb/biggrin.gif

Thanks for the replies, fellas. Here's a great coat hanger story for you that involves my FSJ...
So there I was about a year and a half ago...the proud new owner of a '78 Chero Chief. I drive to the probate court to get it tagged and titled, basking in the glow of the stares I'm getting driving down Atlanta Highway through the mincing herd of Explorers and baby cheros. In fact, I'm so full of myself that I grab a key at random from the bunch the FDSPO threw at me...you guessed it, I locked the door key in the Jeep. It took a security guard with his trusty universal antenna replacement fifteen minutes to unlock that door. Of course, since it's been broken into through the vent window I can get inside in under a minute!

I found out that the local laundry places uses an almost similar device to retain pieces of clothing in a vertical position. There was an old one out back so I procured it. I think they even called it a "hanger" or something like that, does that sound right? Anyway I still have that thing in the back and have used it for numerous things. Why dont more people know about these wonderous devices? It must be a laundry trade secret..

its real purpose is to keep my low range unit selector pinned in the hi position.
really open the back access panel and yank on it. its a plug. then just clip it off and tie the wires together to bypass the switch forever. I did. mine would slip off that little tab and would stick. the last time it was raining buckets.
I just keeps you from opening the glass with the tail gate open. Duh. if we were that dumb we would own ford exploders.
