View Full Version : Warm Idle speed question

When I start 'er up in the morning without engaging the choke (just turn the key), she idles smooth and low-what I think should be the idle should be after warmed up. I hit the gas and the fast idle kicks in and she warms up, but she never comes back down to that initial, slower idle speed. After warm-up, the idle does back down to what would seem an acceptable level to the non-discriminating ear, but just seems a tad too fast.

When I engage the choke before starting (push pedal to floor once), it's the same scenario.

The only time this idle speed occurs is after the engine is completely cold.

Is this an idle speed adjustment or choke issue, or am I just being an FSJ hypochondriac?

After mine warms up some I need to kick it down. Have you tried this? Just punch it real fast.

Yep. I fixed the choke heater and plugged the "hole" in the carb that used to have a plug (near the choke). It behaves a lot better now. Previously, the fast idle speed would be REALLY fast, and tapping the throttle did no good. Now, as the engine warms, I can tap the throttle, and the idle slows down-but the idle's still a little faster than if I crank it cold without engaging the choke.
I had a problem with symptoms just like this on a Celica. There was something sticking with a device that idled the engine up to compensate for the A/C.
