I searched around for this topic but am having trouble finding something. I have an 88 with a few gauges out and crack plastic, and a few drilled holes fom where the police issue was mounted:D
what I'm curious about is is it possible to swap an entire 85 or older dash into my 88? I just love the round gauge style of them. Planning on putting new gauges in, just want the set up

Yes, the physical dimensions are the same...it will swap over.

Ok great, thanks. Is that not reccomended or somethin? Or just preference. I can't wait to get out of the theoretical and ACTUALLY get to work on my rig. Dang skoolin' :grumble:

Yeah anything will bolt in there. It's up to you to completely rewire, and check to see if the older gauges will work with your current senders and whatnot. Best bet would be to use an aftermarket gauge cluster (like the ZMJeeps one for instance) or make your own plate and buy your own gauges.
I have a tan 82 dash that can be pulled easily if you need one. That's the metal only fyi.

There are wiring, HVAC control differences, radio mounting, etc....
86-up has the plastic controls next to the cluster, 85-down has controls in the cluster.
Mostly it's preference, but you will need to address the changes if you decide to switch.

since I'm planning a diesel swap won't I have to redo some gauge wiring anyway? Figures I might as well do it while I'm in there

Don't forget it's easier to remove the dash if you remove the windshield.
While you're in that far, check the wiper mechanism and clean out the air vents.

I just did an '85 GW fuse panel and dash wiring harness into a '75 pick up.
If you had the doner there (I do) you could do the entire thing, cables and all.
