OK I am looking for some good news out of this ( I Hope). I have a 77 Wagoneer, I have a rebuilt AMC engine, and recently the bolts connecting the flywheel to the torque converter have begun to rub against the access plate when at an idle.... Currently it is not running, awaiting accumulation of funds for a Howell Fuel Injection Kit. What could be the problem? I hope the solution is not replace the Tranny.

My 87 started doing this except mine rubbed at heavy throttle. I have the 360 w/torqueflite transmission. Unfortunately, my problem was the engine having excessive crankshaft endfloat (1/4"). When you shift from Neutral to Drive you can see the flexplate/torque converter/crankshaft pulleys, etc move forward/backward. What is really weird is the engine runs great, has great oil pressure and only a very slight leak at the rear main. I'm planning on pulling the engine in a couple of months and have quit driving it. I hope yours is a simpler and less costly problem.

You could have a broken flex plate or a bad torque converter (or both) as the converters tend to swell when they go bad. Also make sure the right flex plate on engine, they do not interchange between engine sizes and the resulting vibration will cause the bellhousing bolts to back out allowing the T/Con bolts to rub. You did make sure the tranny bolts were tight, right?

Yes I have made sure the bolts are tight. How can I make sure the Torque Converter has not swollen? Are there size specs or something?
