I am finally done playing around with my fuel guage, the thing never seems to stay working. Its not the sending units in the tanks either. The guages just shut off. So i'm looking into putting aftermarker guages in. I want to put to guages for both my main and auxilury tanks. I'm looking at Summit racing for guages. All i can find are ones that are for 1965 and up GM, and some for Ford and Chrysler. Then for the GM ones is says 0-90 ohms. So basically, i have no idea what i'm looking for. Anyone put aftermarket guages in? If so, what should i look for and how do i make sure they are accurate? Thanks for you help!
I've got Stewart Warner underdash.I'm using their sending unit. Most after-market require a dedicated sending unit I believe.

My gauge stopped working. It was a ground wire on the driver side of the frame in that big wiring harness for the tailgate and the rear lights.
I drilled a small hole, put a sheet metal screw on new section of the ground wire and tightened it up. My gauge works fine now.

I don't know how the later model FSJ senders are setup but there is no dedicated return wire all the way from the sender to the gauge return on the older FSJ like my 76. The sender return is through the gastank body to the mounting bolts and tankstrap to the frame. If the tank is loose the sender indication will fluctuate. If the tank doesn't have a good electrical connection to the frame the gauge won't work correctly. I fixed mine by attaching a separate return wire from the tank body to the frame. The sender provides 80 ohms empty and 0 ohms full. I have my main tank out at the moment to install larger fuel supply and return lines for EFI. I just installed the sender yesterday. I used a meter to confirm I had a good return connection from the sender to the tank body after installing the retaining ring for the sender assembly. I will also be checking the sender to frame resistance once the tank is installed. Gotta check that return wire Bostonwranler mentioned also. I disconnected it to clean it's connection and install a new fastener.
