We had some ignition problems on the trip to PHX and back. We figured it was something with the new Mallory HEI. Then thought it was solved when Ryan found the voltage regulator was partially unplugged. Then 20 miles later it started again. Then Ralph gave me a old GM HEI module and seemed to be fixed until we hit the 101 headed to Anthem. Picked up a Borg Warner module with Ralph at a Checkers. Had a PM with Zack yesterday. This morning I got one from him...
Do yourself a favor and pop the dist out and look at the dist and cam gears. Make sure they aren't eating each other...
Zack
WELL... This is what it looked like 450 miles ago, just before we left Anthem, AZ.

Phoebe pulled through and got us home backfiring along the way. Several through the carb. Got some work to do. Whew... G'nite.

You are quite lucky she did not leave you on the side of the road. Glad to hear you made it safely!

I know its silly to anthropomorphise a jeep, but Phoebe has never left us stranded. A few times we had to stop and cuss and wait on the shoulder before she could muster a start for me, but she has always always got me home. She pulled us over 400 highway miles today and over 600 more the previous week when she should have failed. Catastrophically. Maybe being the High Priestess of Eternal Combustion gives me some brownie points with the FSJ Gods, or maybe I'm sucking up all of Sean's luck, or maybe my jeep just loves me. ;) I don't know, but she's more faithful than my dogs.
At any rate, we'll crack open her engine for the first time and give her some TLC. She has 109,000 on the odo and I have driven half of those. At 32 years old she deserves some lovin'. Here's to the next 30 years with my steel 401 baby! :D

may as well shove a cam in it. i think the milder lunati voodoo would be great in a stock/mild 401.

Was looking at Lunati online earlier. The 256/262 Mike?

oop you're right flint.,i meant the second mildest. the 64501. there is a milder one than that even, too small for a 401 i think though.

Glad to hear you folks made it home.
Jeepstress, My J-10 has done me the same. Once had to limp home 15 miles @ 20 MPH. But I did not have to walk....:D
Glad you folks are back safe.

Just a silly little thing, but you might try changing the rotor first.

We need to repair mechanical problems before driving it again to see if the ignition is still wacky. The rotor and cap appear fine. I have seen a stock dizzy cap crack before and cause crossfire issues. From the looks of the cam gear, there is not much left to bite on. I am guessing there is quite a bit of slop in the chain. I thought we heard it making noise at cruising speeds. We have the gear & chain parts and top end gaskets here that I have been pulling together for a cam job. Just need the cam & lifters and front gasket set. Getting that lined out now.
not FSJ - meanwhile the fridge croaked while we were gone. :banghead: Repair for that is coming on Wednesday. :(

The timing chain went on my blue '76 right @ 99K and the dizzy gears were maybe 100 miles behind that. I swear you guys have all the luck, if that were me the gears and timing chain would have went out and as soon as I got it all fixed the TH400 or QT would have gone south just to spite me. :p

Well, this one is 109K sean. My 88 360 went 225K before valve train problems started. We feel lucky getting home. :) I am pretty sure the cam gear was going for a while because the Prestolite dizzy gear was pretty worn. It had been in the engine about 40k miles. I should have looked deeper in the hole with a good light before I dropped the HEI in.
Just got Jegs order in for gaskets, Lunati Voodoo 262/268 cam and lifter set. That was covered by my PowerLok sale reserved for mad money on this trip.

make sure to use the same material gears, or at least compatible materials. Also, check the timing chain gear for excess flashing blocking the oiling chamfer. Lastly, check the cam and lifters before replacing, as the may / may not be damaged.
Oh, and with the backfiring, if you are running the stock FSJ carb you'll be needing a new powervalve as well. Sorry to hear about the hiccups.

Thanks for the tips Ryan. One thing I am relatively confident of, any AMC V8 built between 1967 and 1991 with over 100K on it will get a wake up with new cam, lifters, tc set. Voodoo cam is here but the lifters are on back order with Jegs. You get no email when that happens on an Internet sale. hmmm... You have to call. Just need to know. We have a substantial pile of parts together for this though. Gonna pull the stock intake and 4350 and step over to a Performer and AFB.

Hey that Lunati box looks familiar!
Ive got a Lunati VooDoo 60101LK sitting right next to me for my 350sbc buildup im doing.
I ordered my cam with the LK after the number, so it came with a set of lifters in the kit...is that how you did yours or did you order lifters seperate?

I always had good results with the Carter AFB's, but I never ran one offroad.I've had an AFB on Wally for 5 years and it works pretty good.
Mike, you must be a Holley guy. ;) I do have a truck avenger to go on Wally and the AFB will go on the J20. I think that is a 2010 project...
