I had spent a couple days with a wire wheel, sanding and painting and installing new brake lines on my dana 44 rear end I pulled from a 78 Wagoneer. I am now ready to move on to the front housing. I had a couple questions. Will I be able to salvage the front rotors as they are rusty, also my backing plates are pretty bent up. I was thinking of trying to repair them unless someone has a pair. Is this a difficult job to remove the rotors and backing plates?
Thanks

You should be able to save the rotors as long as they are above minimum spec for thickness, just get them turned. I generally take my backing plates off. I've had rocks and stuff build up back there and it ruins brakes on the drive home

Not that difficult, unless you don't have the right socket for the hub retainer nuts. Huge socket with four prongs, Kragens, AutoZone, etc. Straightening that backing plate looks like a serious BFH job, might want to shop around for replacement. As for the rotor, sand it down and check for warp, and run it if its straight.

I wouldn't worry too much about the splash shield. It's thin sheetmetal and you can easily straighten it out.
If the rotors can be turned, turn them and they should be fine.
Doesn't look like the caliper bracket is bent, just the dust shield/splash guard.
I also just cut those off and toss them because of crud getting in there like mentioned above.

I remove those dust covers with the first brake job or wheel bearing repack.

Thanks guys for all your input. It looks like I will be throwing away my bent backing plates and going to the auto parts store for the correct tool to remove the hub. Thanks again for all your feedback..

Can't tell for sure from the photo, is the backing plate and caliper mount one piece of heavy steel or is the plate thin sheet metal welded to the mount?
I'm using the Jeep bracket with the shield removed.
