Anyone know how good or bad a Ramsey worm gear winch would work for a FSJ? I ran acroos a Model 7-R worm gear winch the other day. I got it home and tore it apart and it has not ever been used... no wear signs at all inside. I just have to design a way to mount it and find a way to power it. Any ideas or thoughts about this type of winch?

Whats it rated at pulling? If its like a 8k pound winch it should work fine.

all kidding aside i feel a good winch will get you out of a hole a great winch will pull you back through it at least 6 more times along with your friends my new winch is a worm gear and i have had no problems it just seems alot slower after running the warn 8274 as far as hooking it up did you get the solinoid's with it ???? and the remote control ???? killer 32 had a nice bumper and i think some of the guys on the board here were building some

The winch is rated at 3500 lbs, but I'm thinking I will mount it and run it through a 2 part block and increase the pulling power. The winch has been setting in the shop I work for at least 20 years, and has never been used. I have to come up with some kind of moter to power the winch. As for the mounting of the winch I work in a fabrication shop so I will design a new front bumper and mount the winch on it. I also obtained four Hyd cylinders(used for the tilt on a fork lift mast) that are good. I'm thinking of adapting them on four corners of my truck and use them for jacking it up to work on it. With that in mind I may use a Hyd pump to power the jack cylinders and the winch. Lots of engineering to do yet....

Well when stuck, 3500 lbs of pulling power is better than nothing I suppose. You could use Snatch blocks to double the line pull rating, but that will slow down an already slow winch by twice. I am not sure I would go through the trouble of mounting it, but it depends on how bad you need a winch and if you figure it will do OK for you. Remember this though, the Winch rating is done at the drum, as the cable winds on drum the rating goes down for every layer of cable on drum, so it will pull less and Less and less....Well you get the idea smile.gif

Rated at only 3500 I wouldn't bother with it. Ain't worth all the fab work you have to do plus the motor plus hydraulics etc. You bury a 5000 lb FSJ in the mud all you're gonna do is get someone hurt with that thing. At the very least upgrade the cable on it. You can buy a good used winch for $400 that will do the job and be safe.
