I was wondering if anyone has swamped their auto tranny for a manual in a late model Grand Wagoneer? If so, what did you use and what problems did you encounter?
Thanks!

I was idly kicking around this same idea the other day...the local trading paper had an ad for a 208 and a 4 spd manual tranny out of a Honcho for $400. I think the only issue (besides linkages and pedals, that is) would be the front driveshaft--then again, when I start thinking things get scary :D

I just completed my swap a few weeks ago. I took the easiest, not strongest route. I got a complete drivetrain from an 80 cherokee (pre 80s will work but you need to swap axles too). I put in a T177 and a NP208, my mpg immediately went from 10 to 12! The front shaft fit but the rear was too short. Besides that it was a bolt in, two days, 1 to take the auto stuff off, another to put everything back in. You'll need a new flywheel, cluth and pressure plate kit including the throwout bearing and pilot bushing.
Any 80 or newer FSJ can be your donor, it'd be great if u can find a J20 drivetrain for the strength.
Besides that, there are numerous other options if you don't mind adapters and/or other custom work.
I started a write up that is not complete at:

I forgot to mention, don't get stuff from a six cylinder rig. The V8s require a longer input shaft and bellhousing spacer.
I got all the info I needed here on the forum.
