View Full Version : going diesel--here's a number for a 455
Okay, so I've decided to go to a diesel in my Grand Wagoneer. Here's the number for a guy in Azusa, Ca. who has the '78 Wag with the Olds 455 I mentioned in a previous post. I saw the car last week: Olds 455 with Edelbrock Intake and Qudrajet (I think), th400 trans, and qudratrak. The body is fairly straight, I didn't notice any rust. Interior is pretty trashed. No front door panels, big hole in dash pad. I didn't get to hear it run, as only his wife was there, and she didn't seem to know much. He's asking $650.00. The number is 626-334-9353. Azusa is about 20 east of Los Angeles.
Let's hear more about your diesel conversion, please. I'm almost sold on the idea.
I've heard that the 5.9 lieter Cummins has the same basic bolt paterns as the 360. Is this true?

the cummins 6bt uses an SAE bolt pattern and an adapted bellhousing to mount the gear

TEXTex,
The Cummins engine in the Rams will bolt up to the 727 tranny. The Rams use the 47RH/RE (618) transmission’s, which is a 727 with OD added. Just get a 5.9 Cummins out of a Dodge Ram and it will bolt up.

I thought it has been mentioned on this board that the 6 cyl. cummins engine was too long for a GW?
BTW can a GM diesel be adapted to a 727 transmission? What about motor mounts?

If the 6bt is too long, consider a 4bt. I'm saving up to put one in my Power Wagon.

The Cummins 6BT fits like a champ in a FSJ. No issues with the swap.
Here is a pic of one in an M715:

doesnt it require a dodge TF727 case? As the AMC 727 case has a AMC bolt patern?
You will need to put a AAL up front for the extra weight, as the 6BT isnt light....
I would love the wag but its to far away for me. Otherwise I would buy it right up.

My bust, I thought the Mopar and AMC bolt pattern was the same, but it looks as though they aren't. Sorry about that.
