Would there be any reason NOT to put manual hubs on an '89? I'm assuming I have the NP229. One of the u-joints is shot, so I figure, while I'm in there...

Here are a couple of the standard ones:

* Huge risk to damaging the $350 viscous coupler if the 4wd is accidentally engaged (or engaged by an unknowing driver).

* Negligible fuel and wear savings will be realized by unlocking the hubs in 2wd.

* They cost more than sticking with what you already have.

I second what mister (lord of jeeps and ruler of the all mighty torque wrench) Barry said. Plus, you'll have to lose your center caps, and that would be a shame. Who wants to get out in the mud or snow or other crap just to turn a couple of stupid knobs?

As that is a full-time xfer case you'd have to keep the hubs locked for proper operation and that solid piece of steel in the hub now is way stronger than any manual hub made.DENNIS
