Hey guys,
I had just bought a 1974 J-10 pickup. It has a 401 and a three speed. I was wondering if I could swap in the NV-4500 trans into it. I heard they put the granny gear version into the 1992-1994 Chevy/GMC pickup trucks. Does anybody know which models they put them in. Was it the 1500, 2500 or 1 ton trucks? My friend just wrecked his 1992 K1500 shortbed stepside truck that had a 5-speed in it. I was thinking of buying the tranny off of him. Do you think the truck might of had the NV-4500 in it, or something else?
Thanks for any help

the 6.34:1 creeper gear is available in the pre-'96 nv4500s in GMs only. in '95 GM and dodge started using the same 1st gear ratio (5.61:1). so if his tranny is a nv4500, it should be the 6.34:1 1st gear. go for it.

NV4500s were available starting in mid 92 (and 94 and older had the 6.34:1, Reverse is not synchro-ed BTW).

I doubt they were in the 1500 series.

Chevy called them the MT8.

What tcase do you have now? The early GM 4wd NV4500s have a 32 spline output shaft. But AA's adater requires you cut it down (4.498") to the 31 spline section.

The AA kit PN is 27-0004, which includes a full bellhousing kit, tcase adapter kit, and a shifter handle assembly (these parts can be purchased seperately).

Good Luck,

Charly

Hey Guys,

Thanks for the replies. I had thought that the 1500 series trucks didn't come with it. I think they put in the bigger trucks. Oh well, I guess I have to settle for the stock three speed, for now. BTW, the t-case in my truck is the Dana 20. Once again, thanks for the replies.
