Well i ordered my entire engine gasket kit from Bj's the other week, and last night i pulled the engine out of the jeep. I'm not doing any internal work as time doesn't allow, but i am really tired of the gunky mess of an engine i look at everytime i pop the hood. So i figured it was time to regasket it , repaint it, and just get it to quit leaking. I've already found two bolts broke for my oilpan, and one broke in the timing cover. Guess its a good thing i ordered stainless hardware from Bj's. :D I'll take pictures as i progress.:D

Are you going to check the main and cam bearings while your into it?

Well i'm not sure. yesterday i tore it down and started degreasing and here is what i've found so far. My timing chain was about ready to go. So i ordered a new one, and i accidentally forgot to remove the lifters before i turned the engine over and got the resulting "tink" as they kindly hit the floor. I'm still a little nervous about pulling pistons, mainly because i dont have a ring compressor. The cylinder walls look good and the piston skirts show no major scoring. heads look good and valves are in good shape as well. I did order a new timing chain, and a Summit K8600 while i was at it though. I didn't want a cam but i figured i was this far and i needed lifters anyhow so i bit the bullet.

Well, you need lifters now since one dropped out. But you'd need them with the new cam, anyway. So no worries.
I'd plastigauge the crank bearings just for grins. At least you'd know what your clearances were when you put it back together and you can decide if it's worth putting back together as-is or of you want to have the crank turned.
That is what I am planning on doing with the 401 that's sitting in my garage. It's already been bored over, so I'll just have it honed, I think. All I need is some time and lots of $$$...

Broken oil pan cover bolts? Sheesh. Someone thought more wrenching equals less leaking:).

IIRC, you can just text them to your Photobucket acct and skip the download to the 'puter.

At the very least: new cam, lifters, TC & gear set are in order. These are the things that wear out first on most AMC V8s.

I had to roll my engine over and "tap" the old lifters out.....but the inch or burnt oil sludge didn't help
I'm in the middle of a full rebuild also....
