I received the fuel gauge sending unit I ordered from Mefford this weekend, and I have question for anyone tha has removed theirs.
Should the float be "sticky"? I haven't even seen the old one, but the float on the new one will barely rotate up and down. It seems like since it is not freely moving uop and down, that it would go up and not come down and always read full.
Any ideas?

It is ok. They put some resistance in the float to keep the needle from bouncing around!!

Hey, I need a fuel sending unit also but havent been able to find one. Who is Mefford? Also, what exactly does the unit do? Why have a sending unit and a fuel pump?

bchesley-Thanks for the info. I sorta figured that-but it is REAL stiff. But as much as the gas comes and goes in that thing though, it should loosen up soon enough smile.gif
Nathan-Mefford is another place you can get some parts cheap-in this case they were about $5.00 cheaper than specialty jeep, and more importantly, they had it in stock and would send it o me. Their web site: http://www.meffordhood.com/
Is anyone else having trouble getting parts from Specialty Jeep? I ordered some things from them back in early February-and they finally got to me last week. And they still owe me $4.00 for an order they screwed up. I am just cutting my losses on that one-I'm tired of messing with them.

I replaced mine from the dealer for about $50.00.
He had to order it, but it only took a couple of days. Yes, it was very stiff. It does not read as accurately as the old AMC one. It stays on full a lot longer, and once it comes off full, it comes down pretty fast. But when it says EMPTY, it really means it !
I bought 2 of them so I can rebuild the sending unit in my J10. ( havn't done it yet ) No one makes one to fit the side mounted sending unit on an '87. Only the top loader for the Wag and Chero.

If your fuel sending unit isnt working, is it really that big of a deal for a non-daily driver?

I guess it depends on how long I let it sit in the yard, and how far I drive it when I do drive it. I figure it will still get 2-3 days a week of use, especially since now it is getting warmer and it pulls the boat-so running out of gas would suck.
