Is your 4wd engaged using a inside vacuum switch? If so, you should hear a hissing sound briefly when you engage it (with the engine running), if you hear a continues hissing in the cab, you have a leak by the switch or in the dash. To detect a vacuum leak under the hood, engage the 4wd switch and look at 2 or 3 tubs (usually yellow and green in color) by the fire wall (towards the back of the engine). Follow the lines to you transfer case using a spray bottle of soapy water and spry the lines. If a significant number of bubbles occur in one area, you found the leak. This method worked for me.

If you have front axle disconnect vacuum motor on your front axle on top of the differential check the lines coming off of that. They should be rubber and them run into a block mounted on the motor mount on the drivers side of the truck. They come out of the block as steel lines, these lines may be rotted out just like mine are but I have more serious problems to take care of than that right now. Also check the vacuum lines coming out of the firewall coming from the vacuum switch, there should be three of them, I think one is red, one is yellow, and the other is green(someone correct me if I am wrong). Trace those down and see what you come up with, hope I could help you out.
