unlike like my last post (sorry gsmikie) ill try to be more specific - ill number my noises below:
all refer to the 82 chero:
1. when casually rolling along i have a loose rattling sound that is very ovious from the passenger side...? could be anything right?......
2. when going over slight bumps etc there is an additional noise - may just get a fraction quieter when brakes applied, but not too sure......hhhmmmmpppphhhh!!!
mechanic has tightened all lugs 'n wheel covers 'n shiat - to no avail.......
3. (noise 3) at higher speed, slight little "purr" sound (actually, but more agressive than average feline...) frequently eminates from some where behind the glove box, then suddenly goes away.....& returns again later.....?
4. (what then heck, whilst im here....) when the foot goes down, there seems to be what i can best relate to a slight "splattering" sound, from the passenger side area, kinda near the dash (not dissimilar to exhaust manifold gasket ticking sound, but more pronounced)......especially when climbing inclines etc......

#1,2. check the o-rings inside the caliper mounting ears where the bolts go through. If they are in bad shape or missing the caliper will rattle. Make sure the ears on the outer pads a squeezed tight against the caliper. Check your shock mounts.
#4. Check exhaust manifold and EGR gasket.
Placing my bets on a bad/incorrect wheel bearing and locknut setup.
I have done this several times myself.
You said the "mechanic has tightened all lugs 'n wheel covers 'n shiat - to no avail......."
Did he...
just tighten lug nuts? (not much other stuff to tighten out there).
pull the wheel?
pull the hub?
Pull the axle?
...If not I would find another mechanic.
When I hear a noise, I keep going in till I find something.
PS: 18cherokee, we know what your refering to when you use "shiat", we don't really care, but it's a family board, not really necessary and actually a sort of rude way to get your point across, good luck.

1. ensure the dust cover around the rotor is plenty clear of moving parts... check ubolts for proper torque of 90 Ft lbs.... check wheel bearings as stated
1&2... check shackle bushings
3. can you 'feel' anything in the steering wheel....
4. Sounds like your pinging... check the EGR/timing... check emissions hoses for lose connections off the air pump and manifolds

tadsal - got it, thanks for the advice.
back to the "beef of the message",
> front locking hubs were all repacked & sorted.
> rear bearings replaced, packed etc.
could you suggest other action other than the above - what do you mean by pull the wheel, hub etc?
tks.
im learning chit all the time smile.gif

check the heater blower motor could be a bad blower cage/somthing fallen down the defrost vent 4. by the way, thanks for the responses so far.
as i am not the least mechanically minded, i will discuss this with my mechanic.
unfortunately there arent too many fsj in australia, which means there arent too many "qualified" blokes to work on them.
i have faith in him, as he has done suspension work on the tj & cherokee, & he works on several other fsj in the vacinity - not too much choice i feel.
i hope he appreciates the advice you have given me which in turn will be forwarded to him (except the "get a new mechanic" comment)

#1&2, dust cover @ front brakes could be broke. Mine @ the front bolt location is cracked and it is vibrating mainly when i stop i hear it. very annoying but not so much i'm pulling the wheel yet.
#3 something loose?
#4 exhaust manifold gasket
these are my guesses.
