I got a quote this morning for a new windshield for my Jeep. $200 for the glass and installation. They wanted $75 for a new gasket but I think mine is ok. They told me that they do not use Chinese made glass, but I don't know about that. Seems like a fair price to me.

That is fair. I used a glass co. to install a w/s on an 83 Cherk. Total time to remove the old and install the new one was about 2 1/2 hours. IMHO it was money well spent.

Yeah, sounds average.

Sounds like a fair market price to me. This brings up a question-- Does the brow on a J-truck require a different windshield for a Cherk/Waggy vs. J- truck?

The guy told me it was a two man job and they would need it for half a day. So, I tink it is reasonable. This place does really good work and am willing to pay a little extra for that.

As far as I know (not much) the J trucks use the same windshield.

I just had a new one installed a couple months ago. Paid $225 including gasket. Good price, took one guy to come out and about an hour later he was done.

You're gonna want the gasket, as soon as they're done you know its gonna leak. Most of the time with windshields like this they just cut the gasket out when removing the windshield so I'm kinda wondering why its not included.

You're probably right, but I do trust these guys. They have done multiple windshields for my employer with no problems yet. There is a first time for everything, though.

I was able to salvage a 'shield and gasket from a '75 J-10 in the boneyard by myself-- "unlocked" the gasket an carefully pushed on the glass here and there 'til it was free. I can't imagine installing one solo, however. The gasket was in excellent shape. No cracks. I've been told by old Ford guys they'd rather not have to use a new gasket (Chinese?) as they are too tight. Leaks probably depends on attention paid to sealer between body and gasket and gasket to 'shield....

I would recomend they don't use urethane windshield adhesive that typically would be used on late model unitized auto bodies. I have come across several FSJ's that have had this done. Urethane adhesive is not only unnecessary for a body on frame FSJ, it also will require another gasket if the glass needs replacing in the future. I have used strips of butyl several times in the past to help prevent leaks with good results. Butyl is what was used to install windshields in the days before unitized bodies. The front and back glass in most if not all of todays unitized car bodies is an integral part of the body structure as related to crash safety and must be installed using urethane.

So Butyl might be what the shop manual specs for a sealant... Now I'm curious....

Very interesting, the guy at the glass shop (I think he's the manager) said the gasket probably can be used again. This shop is good they do glass on everything with wheels. I'll see what he says about what sealer they use.

I've seen a lot of subpar work from a number of glass shops, these guys are the best I've seen.

The gaskets can be re-used if they are in good shape.

They are usually not in good shape in these parts.
If an installer gets too aggressive with it, they can easily damage it, and you'll have a leak.

Get it in writing that they'll guarantee no leaks/fix a leak even if it's only the labor cost and you have to buy a new seal.

I had mine replaced for ~$150 in '05, and the thing leaked like a sieve afterward.
I had it done on the road, and no chance of getting the leak repaired for free:mad: once I got back home.
They were pretty cool about it when I got home, and sent me a refund for $100.

Babywag-
That would tick me off pretty good. At least you got something back.

$200 is a great price. Here in the Chicagoland area, that's a superb price!

Ozzy's Bodyshop in Loveland CO replaced my windshield PROPERLY after the first bozo I took it to screwed it up.

It was about $185, IIRC, and that included the new gasket.

This was about a year ago.

I remember I had one done on a 1987 Caprice wagon maybe 3 years ago. It was around $150. I don't know how much it would be now.

Wow, that'd be a deal if I could get my Jeep up there from the Springs.

it was quoted to me as about $250 from Safelite glass and I was happy with that. They do a great job and $50 down the road doesn't hurt as much.

i replaced mine myself... took about two hours to remove it from donor rig and install it in mine... took a bit of extra time prepping the old gasket and windsheild frame... then used some good old fashioned silicone sealant and haven't had any leaks... that only cost me 40 bucks... around here they quoted me 200 for a new window and another 150 for the gasket... they don't offer a black kit... just the one with new chrome pieces...

I am getting a new glass installed on Monday. $252 for glass (with top tint) and gasket. I had access to a used glass but after trying to remove old broken windshield, i just will cough up the dough for this one.

I believe mine has a used windshield in it, no cracks, but it's starting to turn white at the corners. Also, I don't seem to have a gasket. Looks like they laid it in and used urethane and silicon to seal it. I plan on replacing it, and I was quoted $250 with a gasket as part of that quote. The lead time to order the glass was 30 days, though? Safelite said they couldn't even get glass for it. It's just a 79 J10...
