Questions about my New Jeep

I just inherited a 87 Grand Wagoneer from my little brother, because he couldn't give it the love it needs, and it has some little problems and I thought you guys might be able to guide me in the right direction. First one is it will only drive in 4wd if I try to switch to 2wd (I believe it's a NP-229) it won't move any suggestions on fixes or should I scrap it? Second one is when I start it I get a fair amount of black soot from the exhaust, is this normal? will a good tune-up fix this? Sorry I know these are newbie questions but I just got this thing yesterday and want to start fixing these problems but have never worked on a car before so still learning.

The NP229 uses vacuum lines too switch between 4wd and 2wd. If these are cracked or not hooked up right it wont switch. The lever on the floor is for low range and high range.

For the soot, I would give it a tune up and rebuild the carb. Sounds like its running way rich. The needle and seat may be really worn letting in more fuel then they should.

Thanks alot I will start inspecting the vacuum lines this afternoon (I found a schematic on this website) it will be my first attempt at vehicle repair "Pray for me".
