will A/T fluid harm the power steering pump? I know they make power steering fluid. I purchased a truck and and the owner said it had Automatic transmision fluid in the power steering pump. Do I need to flush it and put power steering fuuid in it?
THANKS

Power steering fluid is formulated for a certain purpose.
The system will perform better and longer when using that.
Would you put PS fluid in the automatic transmission??????

GM (the manufacturer of most FSJ power steering pumps) recommends Dexron III for the powersteering fluid. And DON'T use type F transmission fluid in a TH400 of TF727.

I really would like to know the difference, besides the color. Hankrod

what do you think bandm trick shift is among other performance trans fluid?it's type f.
in fact if you use a bandm shift kit it says to use typef in the directions

This thread is about power steering fluid. I'm not gonna start another "I run this or that in my tranny and ....." Stock TH400 and TF727 take Dexron ATF. Type F does not contain the correct additives for these transmissions.

Type F is a non-friction modifier trans fluid. Dexron/Mercon has friction modifiers. Don't ask me what that means I'm no chemist. All I know is I'm not putting type F in a transmission that was designed to use Dex/Merc.

i guess all these people are wrong.

the friction modifiers in dex allow for more slippage of the clutches for a smoother more cushy shift.therefore creating more heat and lessening clutch life.type f does not do this and has a higher capability to transfer heat then dex does.therefor extending clutch life and thus trans life.simple when you think about it

ATF or P/S Fluid does not make a difference usually, there are some European makes that use their own special stuff that does not mix.

Dex 3, Type F, Merc 5 here's my thoughts

A trans that runs Dex 3, you can run the other fluids with no real issues, maybe the harsher shift.

A trans that runs the others if you put Dex 3 in those it will sure shorten their life, you can add the same limited slip additive that is used in home brew QT fluid to get by if nothing correct is available.
