Well? Ive got a NT axle under the house and the WT front in buttercup has just bit the dust, can I do it and get by for a month or 2? Or is it just more work than its worth?

It should work. The frames in the front are the same as well as all the perches I think. The tires will just be tucked way under the fenders that way. Turning might be a bit funny too but I think it should work...
Anthony
Just get some wheels with no backspacing and you'll be fine. :D

If it was me, I'd slouch down real low in the seat though, so nobody would see me. j/k.
Ah, man, I want to see pic's of this, but...
I'd do it in a heartbeat if it kept me going.

I don't really have to have it for transport, I've got other vehicles to get me around but this is my only truck and its still got wrinkled pieces of billyrb's lamont in the bed that need to be hauled off. I'm going to pull a part tomorrow so hopefully I can score something to swap in there.

Last time I was at the pull a part, I dodn't see and viable chevy's. There might be hope on an old ford.
Nothing W/T in Jeeps, but hell I went last week, you never know. Good luck, give me a holler if they have a set of plain steel 6 lug wagon wheels.
Daniel
P.s. If it came down to it, I might could let you borrow my new W/T front axle off that cherokee I bought.

whats wrong with your current front? you could swap the gears from the NT to the WT axle,or you could pull axleshafts and drive around without untill you can score some new shafts,if a broken axle is your prollem.
i wouldnt be afraid to drive around with a completely empty housing before swap a whole front end just to have to take it back out in a month or less...

I believe the trouble is the spindles on the fron tkeep failing for some reason, on the 8 lug d44hd.
So I think it is a housing issue

yep, the bolts keep pulling out of the steering knuckle, put a replacement on that I checked the threads before installing and all was good but didn't make it 30 ft before it came apart again, so I think I may have some other issues causing this so I'm gonna swap the whole front as I just don't have any faith in my current front axle anymore.
Daniel ,there are some 6 lug steelies out at Earls with some like 33x12.50's on em with little tread left. Saw em last week down on the left side in the bed of an older chevy. I think I saw another set laying around there also.

Thanks Curtis, now I just need to find time to get down there.
Good luck, and I mean it about borrowing the axle.

why not swap out the knuckles and spindles for the ones on the NT front?

What could make the bolts keep pulliing out ad failing? What would have to be happening to cause it? I have not torn into any of my axle to really even consider what might be the cause of this.
But it is a viable option, 6 lug fronts and 8 lug rears wouldn't be the worst thing ever. But if it won't hold up with the 8 lug knuckle/spindle, who is to say the 6 would work out.
Scotty, what would you think is happening?

I was just out at Earls and for what he wants I may have to buy a parts rig. He's got a ford with dana 60's front and rear and won't split em, for 1500. Almost twice what I paid for my truck!
Daniel Ive thought about borrowing the axle but mine are spring over and the one in your 78 would be spring under. PLus if I'm gonna do this I only want to have to do it once.
I may try having the knuckle drilled and tapped to accept the next size up bolts.

Well fine then, don't do a spring over for me :D
I would say at least try to have the knuckle drilled and tapped, but go to the very next closest size, even if it is metric.
That is the simplest most straight forward and cheapest solution, unless someone knows a reason not to.
I will be on the lookout for viable front spring over axles. Any thoughts on what to look for?

C'mon now Big Red, you gotta come help me throw it in!
I haven't had a free weekend yet to even look at it!
The drive to Gadsden isn't too bad, but the axle prolly isn't a 74 style closed knuckle design, or sprung over is it?

Big red, I'll know tomorrow if I don't find anything, I'll e-mail ya about a w/t front. I'm not skeered of doing the spring over but I only wanna have to do it once, preferably not on a borrowed axle. :YIKES:
hey Daniel, noticed in your sig you need some windows for one of yours, Ive got some cherokee side windows with the flip out vents if your interested.

Thanks curtis, but I too have the windows, they were pulled before I got it for parting purposes. I don't think the cherokee will ever see the road again. And if you need a w/t cherokee body for your extened cab project, I can hook you up.
Or you could buy my front axle if you can't fit a Gadsden Trip into your schedule, but I would prolly want help pulling it, and that might imply help swapping engines.
Let me know if I can do anything for you.
Daniel
