My fuel guge started to act up last year by moving all around and then it finally just started to read empty all the time but would move some times. Well I found out today what was causing it to read empty. The float had a hole in it and sunk to the bottom of the tank. The hole was located where it rubs the bottom of the tank so I would imagine that everyone will have this problem sooner or later. I soldered the hole and replaced the "pick-up" tube strainer so it's ready to go. Just a little FYI if you have a wondering fuel needle.

From irbob
quote:
Just a little FYI if you have a wondering fuel needle.

My fuel gauge better not wonder about anything, I mean what am I going to tell Sally, that we bought Christine. It's bad enough stuff just falls off this thing. :D

LOL...OMG,at least I don't feel so all alone .I wonder if this is my fuel gauge problem.I fill the tank and the needle goes to just above 3/4(always the same and I usually fill her at the 1/4 mark and she takes 8 to 11gals)and needle doesn't bounce.I checked the ground at the rear of the frame(when I take the ground wire off with the key on the needle pegs on full).Any ideas please.

My fuel gauge is operating, but how can I tell if it's accurate? I haven't really run it down far past half-full(half-empty?). Oh well, I guess I'm lucky to at least have one that works whether it's correct or not! :D

Coolram mine is the same as yours and i just replaced the sender, think of it as a resurve when you get to 1/4 you can still get to a gas station lol. ;)

This may sound tongue.gif stoopid tongue.gif , but why don't you put a safety can full of gas in the back and run her dry? Its not a great idea if you have fuel injection, but as long as you still have the carb attached ...

No fuel injection for me! :D I do have a safety can with about 5 gallons in the back and I keep it in there. Will running it dry hurt anything?

It depends on how much junk is in the bottom of yer tank. I'd buy 2 fuel filters prior ... one for the test, one after the test. It also depends on how low the pickup is in the tank. I've never had any adverse problems on any of my vehicles. YMMV

Old motorcycles (without fuel gauges) run dry a lot. You just switch them over to 'reserve' and keep on trucking. The fuel pickup on my old Kawasaki left about a pint of fuel below the pickup.

Hope this helps.
