Well then heck, let's complicate it :)
Redline D4 synthetic is good for resisting heat.

Don't use dexron.

ATF 3 or 4. It says specifically on the bottle it's made for the chryco (TF) autos.

Dexron/Mercon is NOT the same thing as ATF(even though it is for auto trannies)...again read the bottles.

of course it does. it's their fluid "made" for their transmission.

dexron is fine, and is specified in any rebuild kit you'll see. i run it in all of mine,as do nearly everyone else here.

Ummm no Dexron/Mercon IS ATF used in GM, Ford and Chrysler transmissions for many years. ATF +3 and +4 are Chryslers semi synthetic fluids. The 727 was made to use Dexron, you can use the +3 or 4 chryco fluid and it will work great, it just costs twice as much. If your gonna do that you might as well use B&M or Royal Purple.

If I put that in my tranny it would just leave a more expensive oil stain on the driveway.

When I got my 89, it was 2 quarts low on ATF, and having a 98 RAM, I had a case of ATF+4, so I added 2 quarts..it shifts beautifully.

2 days ago I blew a cooler line and lost a couple more quarts...I repaired the line at work, and put in 2 more quarts and it works even better than before.

I like the ATF+4...I dont seeing it being a bad thing, or hurtful thing...

To each his own then I suppose. But I have yet to see a TF tranny (whether in a chryco vehicle or not) call for dexron and we've had several in drag cars and trucks over the years. (and now the jeeps).

The XJ cherokee with the AW-4 uses dexIII/merc BUT that's an aisin warner tranny not made by TF.

Maybe I'm paranoid but I tend to try and use the fluids recommended by the manufacturer even if it costs a little more.

And I'm from Missouri...'show me' where it says dexron/merc is the same thing as ATF and where TF says it's ok to use. :D Sure...it is an Auto Trans Fluid but that by no means makes it the same thing. Unless I'm wrong here (and yeah I could be) that's like saying you can run diesel in your gas engine...it's fuel is it not?:drivin:

If I put that in my tranny it would just leave a more expensive oil stain on the driveway.I put Royal Purple in my tranny after a rebuild once. Just once. It was only in the Jeep 350 miles and dumped it out because the tranny pooped itself. That is an expensive fluid change. Since then, I use mostly Coastal Dexron from AutoZone in all the T400 and 727 trannys here. It is cheap and gets the job done.

I do like the Royal Purple in the tcase (not stock QTs) and axles though.

Here you go....

89 grand wagoneer owners manual page 88.

Use Jeep Automatic Transmission Fluid P/N 82200 922 or equivalent labeled MERCON or DEXRON II.

The ATF + transmission fluids weren't even used until 1988 and by then only a few vehicles even used the 727. I'm not saying not to use +3 or +4, but Dex/Merc is what originally came in those transmissions.

The factory service manual also agrees with Chicowaggy's information. The recommended fluid was Dexron II which was replaced by Dexron III. When these vehicles were new there were only 2 fluids, Type F for Fords and Dexron for everything else.

The Asin-Warner fluids should be okay to use too. I recently took a look at detailed specifications for one of the type "4" fluids and it's labeled as backwards compatible with Dexron.

Mobile 1 ATF for me - seems to shift smoother.

Actually, there were 3. The old Chryslers used type A. Dexron was a better fluid choice over type A. You can run type F if you would like a heavy fluid, but it makes the torque converter squawk when you hit a gear change. ATF4 is full synthetic, not semi-synthetic.

yep.type f will give a quicker, harder shift if you want it. i don't care for the feel.

most all ATF's are about 90% mineral oil,and friction modifiers of varying recipes.

I used it temporarilly because it seemed to leak out slower.

 A man after my own heart.........

All we ran in the TH400's and TF727's around here was Dexron. Amazing how well they shift once they've been rebuilt......;)

What about a container marked Dexron III?

What about a container marked Dexron III?That will work just fine. If you have an Advance Auto Parts in your town, see if they have B&M Quick Shift. The stores around here were clearancing it at 1.95 a bottle.

Okay cool. I have some of that left over from my AW4 swap into my Wrangler.

Dexron III is a replacement and backwards compatible with all previous versions of Dexron as well as the old "Type A" mentioned earlier. "Type A" was the predecessor to Dexron and replaced by same in the 60's.
