View Full Version : '78 Exhaust
Does any one know if the '78 Wagoneer came form the factory with a catalityc converter? I just bought one from Washington and need to smog it in CA.
Thanks
Tom
Only 1978 CA FSJ's had converters. The other 49 states didn't in 78.

The cat is on now, but after smog.... advantage with the flange and a new piece of pipe with flanges is you can take it out or put it in, in about 10 minutes. Just unbolt the flange drop the pipe and install the converter with new gaskets of course.

The only way the smog guys can tell whether you had Cal emissions equipement or 49 state stuff is from the emissions decal on the air cleaner. What . . . your decal fell off 20 years ago? There's only 49 state stuff on? Well then it must be a 49 state car. Anyway, according to the '77 TSM, 49 state cars had EGR, PCV, air injection, TAC air cleaner, heat riser valve, an EGR CTO, and a spark CTO. Cal cars added a cat and an EVAP system. I don't know what gear a '78 had, check into it closely (get a TSM) and when you take it to the smog guy make sure the equipment is consistant with what you claim the car to be. The AQMD computer lists what gear is supposed to be on Cal cars and on 49 state cars so the smog guy will know what to look for. I checked into this carefully (actually called AQMD and discussed with my local smog guy) because my air cleaner decal was hot stamped void in about 10 places all across the decal. Looks like this was done by a dealer or the factory when the car was new. Can't tell what it originally was. So I got it smogged as a 49 state car.
