Time for me to pick some of your brains.

I just bought this 1986 GW and there is a constant draw off the battery somewhere. I want to figure out if it is a wiring problem before I swap motors. While trying to track it down I have discovered that the alternator is bad, and on to the question.

What kind of voltage should I get at my coil when
1.)the ignition is off
2.)the ignition is on but motor not running
3.)With motor running
I am talking about at the posts
Right now the numbers are as follows
1.)6 volts
2.)6 volts
3.)6 volts
I think the wiring may be bad or the coil due to the fact with my 83 hooked up with jumper cables I am getting between 13-14 volts at the battery and getting the same readings. I also tested the alternator with the voltmeter and pumping anything out at the alt. I was wondering if that would mean anything when it comes to a constant draw or ant signs.

By the way I know the primary circut is not staying open becuse I put in a good solenoid. I am also pondering if the battery is just bad itself. Sorry about the long post.

You should have about 6 volts when running or the key turned on and 12 volts when the starter is cranking. so....

1) 0 volts
2) 6 volts
3) 6-9 volts
4) 12 volts (when starter engaged)

Number one could be a problem.

Yort, so that would basically mean that the ignition circut is staying open somewhat even though none of the gauges or such are on. It is still drawing power because it is not completely off. Now you have got me thinking, thanks a million, I really mean it.

start with a known good battery. eliminate that as a first step. batterys often develop internal shorts and wont hold a charge.
