View Full Version : D60 swap in Wagoneer, which parking brake cable are you using?

I need a parking brake cable for my ford D60- it needs to be at least 51" from mount in the drum to mount in the frame (that is the length of the stock one).

I figure that I could go longer and route it in a way to take up the slack, as it is now it is kinda too short anyway.

What does everyone else do when they swap in a 60? Not run one..? Seems like no one does.

I am thinking maybe one from a J-truck that originally came with a 60 might work, if the lengths are good. If anyone has any specs on any of the cables I would greatly appreciate.

THIS IS ONE OF THOSE MINOR BUT IMPORTANT DETAILS OF THIS SWAP. YEARS AGO I PUT A J-20 AXLE IN MY 82 CHEROKEE WITH A 4 INCH LIFT. I HAD CUSTOM CABLES MADE. I AM ABOUT TO PUT A 4 INCH LIFT IN A J-20 AND I WILL NEED CABLES.

THE PLACE THAT DID IT WAS CALLED CONTROL CABLES AND I WILL BE ALSO REACHING OUT FOR THEM SOON.

When I swapped a D60 into my J2000, I used GM 14b rear cables, made my own mounts and made an intermediate cable. Cost was around $40 and it's been working fine for 5 or so years.

I went disk brakes and did not worry about it.

parking brake? we dont need no stinking parking brake  Thats what that "P" is for :p

however it is good to have some purely mechanical brakes if something was to happen to your brake system.

I say you have bigger fish to fry...get those axles rollin! then worry about the stopping

Well it is too much trouble to take the drums back off again so I may as well do it now.

All I need is a measurement from mount to mount of someones stock J-truck with a rear 60.. anyone?

I have one sitting in my yard covered, I can help you out.
What mounts?
Spring perches?
shock mounts?
Backing plates?
These drums come off with a screw in the drum. No need to take the hub off like other D60's

I just read the complete post.
So you would like the length of the stock cables on a Jtruck D60?

Your drums come off with a screw? Interesting. These have pressed in lug studs that go through the hub.. so in order to do the brakes you have to drain the fluid, pull the shafts, pull the outer bearing, and remove the hub/drum assembly.

All I need is just a measurement from the "mount" where it clips into the drum, and the "mount" where it clips into the bracket on the frame.

i used J20 cables on my Dodge D60. They are a bit long but I was able to place them so that there was no issues during flex. This was on the 85 with about 8" of lift. When I upgraded to disks, they fit perfect.

THE CABLES BOLT ON TO THE BACKING PLATES ON THE DANA 60. THE CABLES IN THE PICTURE WILL NOT WORK ON A JEEP DANA 60

That is correct. On mine I removed the bolt-on plates for the disks.

Both axle's are all connected still, I'll have to pull a drum tomorrow night.

So, the Jeep D60 end does not look the same as the above Ford F250 D60 "drum mount, inner cable" end?

Holy Great Googley MoogleyGreat Googley MoogleyGreat Googley MoogleyGreat Googley Moogley all that mess with cables and crap just get a $30 line lock and be done with it. Better than any parking brake I've ever used.

YES FOR THOSE OF US WHO NEED TO PASS STATE INSPECTION, A LINE LOCJ WILL NOT PASS. I FOUND A COMPANY THAT WILL MAKE A BRAKE CABLE LONGER THAN THE STOCKER AND WILL BLT IN. STAY TUNED.

I guess, I thought about it. But if you lose hydraulic pressure or better yet power then you are SOL. I can get two cables from BJ's for $40, I just don't know which if any would work.

STOCK LENGTH E BRAKE CABLES WILL NOT WORK WITH A LIFT IN A FSJ UNLESS YOU HAVE THE OFFEST LIFT BLOCK KIT THAT KICKS THE AXLE FORWARD. THERE IS NO WAY AROUND NEEDING LONGER CABLES IMHO.

I am using stock cables with my SOA. I am also assuming that truck cables are longer than wagoneer cables hence the reason I am asking.

OK I UNDERSTAND NOW . YOU MAY BE IN LUCK SINCE I THINK THE CABLES ARE LONGER ON THE PU. WHEN THE STOCK ONES COME IN I WILL MEASURE THEM AND LET YOU KNOW. WILL BE BACK IN NJ ON TUESDAY.

Don't get an electric line lock, those will kill your battery overnight anyways. I always use the manual ones.

When I did the SOA I used j-truck cables..PLENTY more length over the waggie ones. Mine are from a J-10 though -d44 so you'd have to go with J-20. I bought them at the parts store

Here is what autozone has listed for the J20..

It has a different mount for the backing plate, I assume this is what you are referring to? I may be able to make that work.. not sure though.

But I still have no idea what the length of those are. I guess I could order them and hope it works
