Fellas:
Sunday when I had the truck out, I noticed a real sweet smell and smoke. Stopped. Opened the hood.
Sure enough a couple drops of tranny fluid came out the top and landed on the manifold. No problemo.
Tighten up tranny dipstick and off I go.
Well today, she erupted like Mt St Helens. I crawled underneath and there is no evidence of a leak anywhere underneath the tranny.
I followed the filler tube all the way down to the tranny. No cracks or weak points.
What in sam hill would cause the transmission fluid to shoot out of the top of the filler tube?
Fellas, I'm lost and would really appreciate any advice you could offer.
Thanks
Janie

would imagine a vent is plugged up somewhere to cause that, but you should probably take the advice of someone more skilled than me

in order for the fluid to pump out of the dipstick tube there is a internal leak (center support/clutch pack lip seal) the center support bolt is hollow and will crack and break causing the fluid to be pumped out of the dip stick tube the trans will work fine then when it warms up it wont shift into drive but when it is cold it will work fine as it warms up the shift's get lazy then it wont shift into drive and it wont pump any fluid out of the dip stick tube until you hit or it trys to go in to drive

Do you have a tranny cooler hooked up with your Rad setup? Maybe it's blocked so the fluid isn't getting cooled.

I don't have the transmission cooler. GSMikie. Thank you as always. The tranny was rebuilt and is still under warranty.
I'm taking the truck back tomorrow, to the guy who rebuilt it. Tell me if I'm wrong, but shouldn't this be covered under the warranty as well?

I'm having this same problem. Shifted fine all last night until I was pulling into the driveway. It's on an incline so I gave it some gas and them saw smoke and smelled burning. the dipstick was not all the way down and tranny fluid was splattered around.
Would the fact that it was shifting fine make it more likely to be a clogged vent or could it still be that hollow bolt?

Please be VERY carefull, carry a fire extengiusher with you! tranny fluid WILL catch fire if enough of it gets on the exhaust manafold. MY JEEP CAUGHT ON FIRE TWICE because of this very problem. The first time it happened to the PO, and it burnt most everything under the hood. I bought the jeep, put about $500 in it replaceing all underhood parts that got burnt, only to have it catch fire on me. It was spitting fluid out the filler tube right on the manifold. I finally jerked the thing out and swaped in a manual tranny...lol
But please be carefull, I dont want you to loose your jeep to fire!

Is it a hi-jack if the thread is that old? :D I wanted to proove that I searched and find out a little more. Well, I guess I'm going to have to learn to rebuild a TH400  . I checked the vent last night and it wasn't clogged, drove around the neighborhood for a bit and noticed it wasn't going into second right away when it should. LAME! Well, at least I fixed my speedometer last night.
