View Full Version : Windshield wiper chatter? It's annoying!

Anyone have a clever trick for ailing windshield wiper chatter? During our recent downpour, my BRAND NEW wipers and blades just chatter, chatter, chatter all day long. ERRR! Just run smooth over the glass!
I thought about lightly sanding the blades to give them a less tacky surface. Any ideas?

Not to offend, but are you *sure* you got the right blades? Also, the spring inside the wiper arm might have stretched to the point that it's not forcing the blade to maintain good contact.

I got the one that the little book that they have at the parts store said to get. I looked it up specifically for an 84 GW. The springs is a good idea. I will check that.

TreadTed,
I've mentioned that I just bought a 2000 Limited Grand Cherokee... On a recent trip with my wife in a hard rain, I said "hey, listen..." she said "to what, I don't hear anything" I said "I know. the wipers are quiet!" She said "Ooooh, your right."
Obviously, we had both grown tired of the GW's "wooooonk... ththththth.... wooooonk....thththth of the old wipers. I too had replaced them hoping that would do it. I haven't tried the spring idea.
Before buying new ones, take the old ones out and stretch them a bit - kinda like re-arching leaf springs. That should give enough life back to them to solve it if it is the springs.

But see, these are new ones. I am guessing it is the springs.

Try wiping the blades with full strength windshield washer fluid. I don't know if it would help but it is recomended by the manufacturers.
If the springs aren't giving enough tension on the windshield, try bending the arms to bring the blade closer. This one is not recomended by the manufacturers but it does work.

try polishing your glass with a good utomotive polish. Not wax but polish I do all my glass and it works great.

New wiper blades usually come with an alcohol pad to clean off the "manufacturing residue". If yours didn't come with one, use a paper towel and ordinary rubbing alcohol to clean the blades. Also, some people dismiss Rain-X as "snake oil", but I've found it works quite well (haven't tried car polish).

rain-x is great! i have used it on two previous cars, but not the GW yet. anything over 35-40 mph and the rain lets go of the windshield and blows off the top. it takes some getting used to, esp looking thru the drops at low speeds if you dont want to use wipers and wear off the coating prematurely. also, the drops get bright and sparkly when street lights go by overhead.

Rain-X IS awesome, until it starts to wear off. Then it streaks really bad, especially when you use the wipers. Also, it's a true PITA to get the residue off when you try to apply another coat. Other than that, though, it works great--it saved my butt when I first got my Jeep b/c I didn't have wipers and it was pouring down rain!

hi guys, I have found that using Bon-Ami or a powder cleaner like that works wonders on the windshield and wipers. I use it before I put on the rain-x. Well haven't on my GW yet. Not sure how it will work with such a vertical windshield.

I got a buddy that is a glass guy, he does anything from doors and windows to huge buildings of all aluminum curtain wall. He recently heard something about diluting the interior type of rainx with so much water and using as a cleaner. Ill have to ask him how that worked and what the formula was.. Ive always had huge succes with straight ammonia in a spray bottle then instead of a paper towel or something, you wipe it off with newspaper. This cleans the livin crap out of windows. Just a couple o glass cleanin idea's.. BTW the ammonia thing is for nicotene on the inside of windows too, when I got my commanche it was nicotened to the max from all the PO's. The plastic dash still has a yellow'd look to it from the heavy smokage. First thing I did when I got that truck was clean it bigtime heheh..
