Also, why would my steering column smoke when I stepped on the gas real hard?
Confused.

you are running rich make sure your air filter is new all ignition parts are good check timing sometimes factory settings are still too advanced for emissions retard it till it just runs good and make sure it is hot when you take it in

I second the above- catalytic converters are MUCH MORE EFFICIENT when at operating temperature. Make sure timing and fuel mixture are good. Good luck!

Matt, run it down 26 and back for a bit then take it in. One thing I know will help when failing hydrocarbons is switching to synthetic oil. Regular oil is hydrocarbon based. Synthetic is not. That won't help your other readings though...
Good luck and maybe you will be seeing Scott after all....

I've been running synthetic in it since about 7,000 miles and it now has 30k. I was planning on running it down to banks and back to deq and see what that does.

Steering column smokes when you step on the gas real hard.
If you aren't getting some smoke blowing back through your firewall, which I think is unlikely, they I would be checking for shorts somewhere in the proximity of the throttle linkage.
You should be able to differentiate the acrid smoke from melting wires -vs- engine smoke. Does it smell like wires toasting (in your GM column)?

sounds good. I'll crack into it this weekend. May be a pinched wire. I was driving it last night when all of a sudden the steering wheel dropped the tilt all the way down. Never happened to me before.

klank theere were some good hints
1. make sure its hot
2. adjust the carb down
3. make sure exhaust components are good
4. Make sure filters are clean
5. you should be able to pass with this engine after the work is involved
email me if you seriously cant pass!

What's weird is that I have a new k&n on it. changed the oil (synthetic). Found a wire on the dizzy that was off before I drove it the 40 miles.
Filled it with Super and drove 40 miles at 60 mph before I went to deq.
*email me if you seriously cant pass!*
I'll do that. Thanks for the offer.
And the exhaust is great. And I even have all the emissions crap working, I think.

Check to see if the dizzy vac. advance is working. Mine is stuck at 30 degrees, which the shop says may be responsible for the high emissions.
Found this by having them run a full diagnostic on the exhaust system after putting a new muffler and tail pipe on; it showed that the cat is doing its thing.

Go here and become educated with the Smog codes, what they mean, and how to potentially fix them.

Are you trying to confuse me?
Thanks, good info. I'm going to go study now.

The EGR is what handles most of you NOX so if it is not working or hooked up properly that will cause problems. Retarding timing like someelse suggested also lowers the NOX. My EGR was non functional and disconnected by previous owners. I put a new one on and it passed with flying colors without Cats, which were also removed by previous owners. All done before we had emissions inspections here.

Klank, What manifold do you have on that thing? It may not even have a EGR port. Sounded like that 401 was really built, my guess is that unless you swapped on another manifold that one may be a Torker and may not have a EGR provision.
(I don't know anything about Torkers, maybe they were available with EGR ports, but that doesn't mean your's has one).

Good luck and maybe you will be seeing Scott after all....Synthetic oil is still based off dino oil, it just has synthetic adatives in it.

(I don't know anything about Torkers, maybe they were available with EGR ports, but that doesn't mean your's has one). The 401 is built pretty bad *ss but only on the inside. The guy who had it built had his mechanics (bobcat mech's) put it in and they used all the same stuff on it including the intake manifold. When I got it had a killer Holley on it which gave it most of the power it had. I have replaced a lot of things on this engine since it's old. I still have desires for it that will come in due time.
Bottom line: I'm getting a new EGR valve when I find out what part # I need from Napa or AutoZone.
I found a hose from the Charcoal canister off.
It could be a good weekend. thanks guys.

P.s. guys. I have the wrong egr on my engine. I put my 360 one on it. OOOPS! Looking for the right one as we speak. I mean type.
