So, I was on my way up to Mt.Ashland for a job interview last weekend (I'm gonna be a ski instructor!), and was running a bit late. I was pushing the jeep pretty hard up some steep, twisting roads, when the truck starting running pretty rough and backfiring and a loss of power. But I had no time to stop, and had to just keep pushing hard up the mountain. Later, I limped the truck back to town, still backfiring and little power. Timing was OK, so I was thinking carb or vaccuum problem - both of which I hate to deal with.
Later that night, my friend's enourmous Buick wagon died in the middle of the city, and I volunteered to tow it up her apartment, even though my truck was running poorly. As soon as I started pulling the Buick, my truck started running much better, and the backfiring ceased. I pulled the Buick home, and then drove the truck around the block, and it was running great! Two days later, it's still running great. But I'm stumped as to why it was running so bad. And why did it run better after pulling a heavy load? Any ideas? Thanks.

Could be a sticking valve, or a stuck-open EGR valve, or a clogged jet, or a stuck advance weight or vacuum advance.

Hmm, OK, well there's no EGR valve (edelbrock intake), and the distributor is a newly rebuilt unit. Does the BID ignition system on the '77s still use weights, or is it all electronic? If it was a clogged jet, is it fixed now, or should I be concerned about it? The motor was recently rebuilt, so I hope it's not a sticking valve. And I'll double check that the vaccuum advance is hooked up OK.
Thanks for the hints, Bob!

Could it possibly have been the altitude change? Just a thoought the others had quite a time with that at Ouray this year.

I call it positive procrastination.

sometimes - and YES this works sometimes, if you leave a problem till later, if you procrastinate just that little bit sometimes, just sometimes it heals thyself.

Altitude is my guess.

It may just be the altitude. Ashland is at 2000 feet, while the lodge at the mountain is about 6500 feet. It just seemed to happen so suddenly, and then persist all the way back down to 2000 feet, where it remained until it was put to work towing. And I've been up there before with the same truck and it seemed to do OK, just a few weeks before.
And when it was back in town, and running badly, there was alot of moisture coming out of the tailpipes. Like, it left wet puddles on the ground under the pipes.
Again, thanks for the help.
