View Full Version : Dana 44 spider gear replacement.

Anyone know whether you can replace the spider gears without removing the carrier from the axle. Or more specifically, will the mate shaft clear a 3.54 ratio ring gear? If it will one can do it.
I hope to replace my rear spider gears this weekend. However, so far, I have been unable to locate an appropriate slide hammer to remove the axle shafts. Which of course one has to do in order to remove the carrier and subsequently unbolt the ring gear. So I am hoping I will discover that I can do it without pulling the diff carrier.
Thanks,
Dave

Sure you want to do it yourself? You are a brave man Dave.

when my amc 20 broke, the cross shaft broke in half, and the spider gears fell out. when i pulled the cover, the cross shaft halves, both spiders and a couple of teeth fell out. i was able to put the spiders back in with the diff in and slide the cross shaft halves back into place. this is apples and oranges since its an amc 20 and i have 3.31 gears. pull the wheels so that you can rotate the diff. if youve got enough room to drive out the little roll pin that holds the cross shaft, you could prolly do it.
however,if your spider gears are worn, your side gears are prolly worn as well.you do need to get the axles out to replace these. my side gears were still in place and i could not remove them.
i have never needed a slide hammer to remove my axles,on my eagle or in my GW.just grab it and give a big heave ho. i know alot of other folks have bolted the drum on backwards and used it as a slide hammer of sorts.
good luck

Dave_S,
Sorry to inform you of this, but the ring gear must be removed to get the X-shaft out...It won't clear the ring gear... I looked at my removed OEM carriers this morning (3.54's) before shipping them off to a fellow FSJer.
Once you pull the axles, remove the retaining caps holding the carrier bearings and races and DON'T mix them up...or upside down either. Mark them so you know where and how they go back in. If you are lucky, the carrier can be removed by carefully prying in out... that's what I did... if not you would need to have a case spreader. Once removed, take out the ring gear bolts and ring gear. then knock out the roll pin retaining the x-shaft and your there. Assemble in reverse order with proper torque specs (sorry, don't have them handy for you).
Good luck... http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/biggrin.gif

Hey Todd, could you email me those torque specs? The mechanic I'm having do this job will probably need them whether he admits it or not!

BnB and Dave_S
Just call RC at NAPA for torque specs:
Pinion Yoke Nut = 200-220 ft lbs
Bearing caps = 65-75 ft lbs
Axle backing plates = 35-45 ft lbs
Ring gear bolts = 45-65 ft lbs
Here are some specifics for setup of a Dana 44 axle housing:
Pinion bearing preload = 15-35 IN LBS
Ring gear backlash = .004-.009 in
This all came from RC 5 min ago from the manual he used to set up mine that I picked up at lunch... He sand blasted EVERYTHING clean inside and out...EVERYTHING looks brand new out of the box and even opened it up to show me the pattern in accordance with specs.... he knows his stuff!...for that I am thankful. http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/biggrin.gif
Also gave good tips for break in period... fill with fluid and rotate by hand in both direction for about a minute. JAck up the rig and run in drive for 5 min and reverse for about 2 min. Let it cool completely... a good 2 hours. Then take it out for a non-stop 15 mile trip at speeds under 30mph and park it for the day. He said from his experience, a slow gradual breakin like this will keep from causing premature wear and a good work-in for new parts. At 500 miles change the fluid and you good to go.
Hope this helps out who it needs to.... I trust him after I saw is 500 hp street legal bright yellow and tubbed early 50's Mopar 360 Pick up truck!!! He runs a consistant mid 9's and low 10's in a 1/4 mile! http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/eek.gif

A mechanic after my own heart, parts in the kitchen, living room, on top of the washer\dryers. (no wife again, seems to be the determining factor. these wife things seem to be an "antipart" . wherever they are there seems to be a noticable decrease in the amount of greasy housings and box's of bolts laying around in an "organized filth" inventory system.) Good to hear your gearing situation worked out well. Hope to hear the reports after after the 500 mile mark.

Parts are cool! On the other hand, parts don't keep you warm on a cold (55 degree) So.Cal. night. So maybe a wife isn't so bad after all. Have been thinking of elevating the "girlfriend" to "wife." I don't know, could be a mistake. Maybe should just get another girlfriend. Will have to give it more thought.

Upgrades are cool(GF to wife)... as long as they love Jeeps as much as you...My wife as a very high tolerance for my rig... sometimes... I just have to weigh the importance of Jeep time to family time and have a balance... then everything works out fine.
"Honey do's" first then Jeep http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/frown.gif My wife needs to get greasy with me sometime... I think it could be fun http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/wink.gif

Wife would nag about the late nites under the 4x4s, nick naming sons Dana and holley or Borg and Warner. "so are the mud boggers asleep?"
pile after pile of ruined shirts and pants. "i only wanted to check my air filter. before i knew it i was replacing the intake manifold. silk wont clean your hand for s**t"
or my favorite. "when are you taking your 440 out of the back my van and putting the seats back it?"
or my garage is so full of mopar junk that i start filling her garage with my jeep stuff.
i then let her dive off road one day and she succumed to the dark side.
she cried when they took HER beloved Power Wagon.
thankfully the WAoneers T-Q went out and she had to drive her minivan again.
"so did you fix it yet?"
"err, well it still feels funny, better let me drive it this week just to be sure."
Duh, what was this post about again?
oh yea spider gears,
OK.
kill them all. all spiders are deadly killers, dont believe what you read in National Geographic.....

Riverbeast ask RC if a 360 mopar will fit a Amc tranny.

when we had trouble pulling a shaft that welded itself to a bad bearing once we bolted a chain to the end if it and yanked it out with the 440 dodge. i can rent you one cheap......
