I just did some Horse trading for a couple of LS1's. Curious who here has made the LS1 conversion and what the down falls were if any. Any advise? Do's or Dont's?

yank convertors makes a kit less than 200 bucks, is it a jeep bell 400 or a chevy bell 400?

i would actually sell the ls1s to some drag racers and buy a truck 6.0 it would be alot more offroad suited with the cast iron block vs the all aluminum ls1. and i would go with a aod 3 speed autos are old tech. you can do a 4l80e and its basically a 400 with a od

700r4 is a lot easier than a 4l80e..... basically the same trans minus the electronic controls

700R4 is a 4l60e without the electronics. The 4l80e is much heavier duty than either the 700R4 or the 4l60e.

700r4, TH350, TH400, 2004r, glide, and basically anything that will bolt to a regular small block chevy can be used behind the LS motors. You will need to use a chevy bellhousing of course. 1 bolt will not be used and a small crank adaptor will be needed as well ($50).

You sure you have LS1s and not 5.3s or some other LS truck motor? LS1s are usually pretty pricey and harder to come by. LS1 would be aluminum block, and aluminum heads out of a passenger car....vette, firebird, camaro, GTO, Cadillac CTSv etc.

So what does the crank adapter do? Space out the flex plate for the starter or something?

Nope, they are LS1's... the 5.3 has a different intake and the pan is a lot deeper along with other subtle differences . Ive put allot of the ls1's in sand cars as well as the 5.3. All aluminum Ls1's with the Corvette plastics.

I already have a fresh TH350 and transfer case out of a K5 Blazer. Im thinking that running that for now and down the road I can throw a 700r if desired. I have a fab shop so changing a tranny mounts and drive shaft lengths is no problem.

Correct, the spacer is for the flexplate spacing. Do a google search for LS1 spacer and you can find them cheaper now.

I actually meant to post that its the same as a 60.

GM's are what i do but i was a bit tired (had jsut woken up).

The spacer is available from GM, roughly $25. You will also need longer bolts, again from GM. Use a flexplate from a 6.0/4L80E combo. The spacer goes between the flexplate and crank. Your TH400 torque converter will then bolt up.

You can't beat an LS1 for smoooooth power.

The one in my Camaro is a treat to drive.

Im told that one of these engines is out of a 99 and the other out of a 2000 Camaro. I have the serial numbers off the engines but Im not having any luck identifying them. I am curious if they are indeed those years. Doesn't the numbers mean anything like the old small blocks? :banghead:

Im also thinking I want this to be as torque eeeee as possible, Any idea what stall speed I should shoot for?

on the front of the intake on 98-00 ls1's you will have an EGR pipe coming out of the top, if it does not have this it will have the "ls6" intake manifold which is better for power, these ran from 2000 until 02 in f-bodies

2000's have egr and cast manifolds.... later engines dont have the egr but have cast manifolds, prior to that they're basically like shorty headers

if it has perimeter valve cover bolts, its a 98, if not you can rule that year out... if it has perimeter bolts but no egr its a vette motor, 97/98

Thanks much! ... Its kind of like not finding what it is as much as what its not? :D When I get my hands on them I will post up some pics... I believe one is missing a intake manifold? why I dont know? Maybe I can make one good one out of the two or something? LOL I traded them for a days labor. So Im not out much if theres a problem.

Looking at one in the car doesn't help much. Yes, there really is an LS1 buried in there. This one is a 2000 Z28 (mine)

Well I went over to his place and snapped some shots... I guess one is missing a intake manifold. Neither have any of the accessories or exhaust manifolds. This might be imposible by pics? This is what I have though. Any help would be appreciated. Its not a done deal so maybe its not worth a days labor?

On second exam I noticed some suspicious peen marks amongst the computer generated s/n's Ive since backed out of the deal. I still did some trading though for the work. A complete 77 lifted blazer 350/350 Np205, a set of brand new 15.5 x 38.5 x 15 monster gumbo's, and a hydraulic ram and power unit, Enerpak stuff. So thanks for all the help it was truly appreciated.
