ok this is to the t/c experts out there. I have found a good deal on a 219 t/c to replace my failing 229. should I bite or keep looking for the 208 http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/smile.gif

I belive a NP219 is a fulltime version of the NP208 so also has the viscous coupler that your 229 has now.. The 208 would be partime only. Dont think there are a lot of them around.. I would call 4xheaven.com and see if you can get parts for it in the case you needed to fix it.

the 219 IMO i a much better case than the 229.you have a "high lock" position that you can limp home in on only the front or rear driveshaft-something that is not possible with the 229-unless you live close enough to get there in 4lo.

219 low range is about the same-2.6 or so,and also is locked.

you have the same full time 4wd as the 229 for use on pavement-snow,rain,etc. like the 229,driving in "full time" 4wd will damage the V/C if you forget to lock hubs or try and limp home with a missing driveshaft.make sure you put it in "high lock."

another big advantage is you have one simple lever.no stupid vaccum thingamabob for 2wd/4wd actuation.

last advantage i can think of is that it is dimensionally the same as the 229,so no driveshaft mods are neccessary.

the only real disadvantage is no 2wd.like the old BW QT you are always in 4wd,so your front driveshaft must be straight and balanced, and it may make your fuel consumption slightly higher than 2wd with unlocked hubs, tho prolly not much. being a full time case, the chain wears out much quicker.check on parts availability like clark suggested.im pretty sure chains and other parts are still available.

i wheeled a 219 in my eagle, then in my grand wag for about a year and a half, and i beat the crap out of it.i finally quit using it when the chain started popping.i still have it,and will eventually replace the chain and keep it as a spare for my j20,since the 208 thats in it has some issues.i drove home several times in "high lock" with a missing driveshaft, and broken cv joints(the amc eagle IFS system doesnt put up with lots of abuse)

hope this helps.the deciding factor should be how important 2wd is to you vs full time 4wd,sice the 219 is a decent case. if you can get the 219 cheap enough,it never hurts to have spare xfer cases. i think youd be very happy with the 219 unless you need 2wd.
