I have a Jeep factory service manual for 1983 and it has a blue cover. If that what you are referring to then absolutely it is better than any non-factory manual including Haynes.

The light blue manual is the 84 mr253(83 is a white supplement to the white 82). It lacks the electrical manual, body, AT and others. Supplements(AMC) came out for a few years with updated info and in 88 DC started printing full manuals again. An 84 isn't much good for a 91 rig. Electrics are different etc. As a "general guide it's ok but get a later manual for specifics. Don't know about 88's but the 89 manuals are red, 90 maroon and the 91's are black. All 3 or 4 are 2 vol sets(main and elec.) I don't know if the 91's are still avail but Leon Rosser used to sell the 90 which works well for a 91(same thing). Dyment makes the manuals for DC. If a search doesn't turn up their addy email me and I'll dig it up. They "may?" still sell the late FSJ manuals. Just be sure you stress you want a FSJ manual and not a little Wagoneer book..

Dang Joe, you're right! My light blue covered manual is exactly what you said, it's dated March '84. I thought it was for '83, well it covers '83's I believe. I think it has pretty good info in it but not for a '91 FSJ. I have a set for '76 and '90 also and the '90 is quite a bit different as you mentioned.

Dyment's info is:

By phone, Mon-Fri 8-4:30 E.S.T:
800-890-4038 (Voice), 216-572-0815 (fax)

Or by mail:
Jeep Eagle Publications
c/o Dyment Distribution Services
P.O. Box 360450
Strongsville, OH 44136

Leon Rosser's web site used to be www.thinkjeep.com (http://www.thinkjeep.com) but they changed servers but I think that addy will still get you to the new site. If not a google search should get you there.

One of the above should get you a new factory manual set. You may have to live with a 90 but it's the same as 91.
