I'm going the cheap route for now, and replacing the bent spring on my 84 GW with a junkyard unit, any helpful hints would be welcome http://www.fullsizejeeps.com/jeeps/files/Parts-Junkyards/springs.jpg

Work out for three months first, get a very long breaker bar and fire up the compressor. It took all of that and still two guys just to break loose each bolt. And don't get me started on the bushings. . . .

Seriously, persistance and a lot of PB Blaster. A second par of hands is very helpful as well as a breaker / cheater bar.

Good luck with it

Two bits of advice for free:

1.
Start blasting the bolts/nuts with liquid wrench or your choice of rust buster ASAP

2.
Stop running over small imports...they have feelings too...

Thanks, I already been hosing everything down with WD40, My dad volunteered to help, so ay least I'll have somebody to share in my misery.

Oh yeah, my wife won't let me squish her metro, so imports are safe, for now......

Just so ya know, PB Blaster blows WD40 away, it is a much better penetrating oil, WD40 isn't that great.

i did a l/f spring-ectomy about 2 weeks ago. i used pb blaster after wire brushing the threads. you should have a 7/8 deep socket for the u-bolts the bushing bolts are 13/16 and the nuts are 7/8. i mounted the ubolts 1st. make sure to get the pin into its hole on the axle. then i used the bumper jack and a block of wood to move the spring so i could put in the rear bolt. i put the wood against the inside of the bumper and the base of the jack. i put the hook against the axle. a 2lb hammer and a tapered punch helped to get the holes lined up. this is the 4th time ive done this job. i managed to get the time of the install down to about 3 hrs using just hand tools.

Thanks for all the advise, I bought a can of PB Blaster, I LOVE IT!!!! I got the whole thing done in just under 2 hours, lucky for me, somebody pulled the spring I needed and left it sitting out, so that helped a lot. $23 for the spring, $4 for the PB, and I'm done, didn't replace the bushings, they were still good, what a relief. smile.gif smile.gif smile.gif

Naw, Sawzall the bolt between the hanger and the bushing, 5 min and if some what
carefull no damage other then the bolt. Cutting torch cuts the nut well but dosen't
help get the bolt out of the hanger !
