View Full Version : Trans cooler/tow package?

I definitely have a transmission cooler on my 83 Limited wag with a Jeep Hitch (it's not a receiver hitch) on the back. Does that mean my new jeep has the tow package hense 3.31 ratio?

if you lift your truck so that the tires can spin freely. Then take some chalk and make a reference point on the tire and frame then do the same on the drive shaft. Then turn the drive shaft by hand and count how many turns it takes to spin the tire you should be able to approximate your ratio more accurately. Its on the Novak website http://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/gearing.htm look at the bottom of the page

Just don't spin the tires by hand. The open diff spider gears will mess the count up.:)

EDIT: Is the tag still on the differential cover?

Thank you Damon....it was right where you said it would be...just had to clear the grease /grunge off to see. Alas...2.72 is what I saw shucks i had hoped for a bit beefier:o

That sounds right - my 85 also has the tow package and 2.73's

Glad you found the tag.

I grabbed a tranny cooler at the local pick-n-pull...got home,pulled my grill and there was a cooler...hah and I knew it had 2.72's. I have since learned there are different reciever hitches too, the difference being the bumper style, unless this one I have is from a J-20:confused:

it's a misnomer that a cooler means tow package and 331's
the cooler is part of the heavy duty cooling pakage.granted with the tow pack you automaticly get the heavy duty cooling pack.
the brand new grand my parents bought in 88 has the heavy duty cooling pack with cooler but no tow pack.and it has 331 gears as well.
my 85 has 272's cooler and a factory hitch.
