View Full Version : White smoke when pedal is mashed?

Whenever I floor it, huge amounts of white smoke comes out the back. When I don't floor it and drive normally, it doesn't smoke at all. I have a small tranny leak that I think gets worse with increased pressure in the lines, since the leak is in the cooler line. Do you think its too much gas or tranny fluid burning on the exhaust? Thats where the tranny fluid drips... I'm fixing it tomorrow I just want to see if its the carb or something as well... I need to jet that thing properly. Thanks

Does the smoke come out of the tail pipe or is it coming out from under your chief? It seems like it wouldnt be tranny fluid if it only comes out when you floor it. If you put it in park and floor it what does it do?

white, I think is water, might have a head gasket or intake issue. Too much gas is black, and oil is blue.

Tranny fluid will burn white also I think ???
Do those things have a modulator valve??? I dunno.
Its a 400 so if there is a mod valve, change it out and see if that dont stop the smoke.

It's got a noticeable blue tint to it, kinda bluish grey.

sounds like a head gasket to me. are you losing any water outa the radiator? or it may be bad fuel. i got bad fuel at a gas station and it puffed whits smaoke outa the pipes and i thought i blew both head gaskets. well tore it down and there was no sign of leakage there. so i asked around and some others that get gas there had similar problems. so all that for nothing. use a can of that iso heat or similar product it removes water from your fuel system it may be worth it.

Zac- I'm not sure where its coming from since I'm always in the seat and nobody is helping me. I'll try to get my dad to look while I drive next time. When I put it in Park and floor it, there's barely any smoke at all, if any.

kyjman- yeah its got a modulator, I don't know much about it though, what does that do? How would swapping it help? Its pretty new...

I'm not losing water out of the rad, but I'll doublecheck to make sure. I'm pretty sure its tranny fluid... its definitely not oil.

Thanks again guys, I'll go out and check all that stuff later.

alright thanks talntar. How do you check those again? Blow on it? I was driving to work one day and it started pouring smoke out up this long hill. Got to the top and pulled over and it went away... So that might be it.

Pull the vacuum line off at the modulator and look for ATF, if the line is dry, the problem is not the modulator.
Good Luck

Thanks guys, I'll check the modulator today, and the pcv valve. If my pcv isn't hooked up properly, would it have the same effect as if it was plugged?

Alright thanks. Today I started it up and it smoked a lot when the fast idle was on. NOT BLUE! White, and it smelled like stinky exhaust again. Dang it, I think I might just have to rebuild my engine when I tear the body off and put a truck cab on. Oh well, sounds like fun to me.

If your water level is not dropping, I would check the modulator again.

I haven't checked it for a first time yet, too busy today. You have to understand this jeep is my lawn ornament for the time being. It was deemed "unsafe for the road" by a cop. It's safe haha. Thanks for the advice guys
