Had a slow day at work, so I finally finished up my CJ tach install.

I used a CJ-style tach I found on eBay. I'm pretty sure they are remade by Omix-Ada and distributed by Crown. It is selectable for 4-6-8 cylinder vehicles.

Install was pretty straightforward, just removed the ashtray, dremeled out the opening and made a cover panel from ABS plastic. I sourced my plastic from a local car stereo shop. It's the perfect location IMO because you have switched hot, ground and backlight wires right there from the lighter. All I had to do was run a wire to the coil for the signal.

I think it came out pretty good, and it sure is nice to have a tach, especially when adjusting idle speed.

Nice job! Good use for some rarely used (or even working) real estate.

Just fyi, it would be Crown OR Omix-Ada, not made by one and distributed by another...they're competitors.

Looks good...I plan on doing the same thing but haven't found a good spot on my older dash to mount it.

Box said Crown.

Thanks for the feedback. My lighter didn't work, but the wiring was good. I may eventually paint the screws black, they're all I had on hand.

I added the 2 port 12v outlet under the dash before I did this to make sure I had a place to charge the phone, plug in the GPS, etc.

I thought that was a candy dish. That's where I put the peppermints I get when I go to Sonic.

I like how that looks. All my ash tray does is hold my garage door opener and fall on the floor. Thats a much better use of the space.

Tach is approx. 2 3/4" diameter. I used a 2 1/2" hole saw and opened it up with a dremel sanding wheel.

The back of the tach, or behind the panel? The tach is nothing special, just a selector switch for 4-6-8 cyl and wires. Behind the panel is about half of the lighter hole and then an open cavity.

Do you have the wiring instructions for it by chance?

I'd do it too, but then where would I put all my loose change?:D
