Gotta question for all you experts. I have an '85 GW with selectrac(which I believe is the NP229 TC) I just bought it and the engine (360) is newly rebuilt. The tranny seems to slip a bit, but not too bad, and the PO said that it has been doing it for a while. It is much better when driven regularly. Well last night I was slowly accelerating from a stop, when it felt like went into neutral then there was a clunk and it worked fine after that. I have driven it around 1000 miles and never had this happen before, and I drove it today and it did not do this again. I have asked around and heard that it might have been the chain in the TC, but after looking in here, I am not sure since it was in 2wd and I read somewhere that the chain is used only in 4wd. Another thing I heard, was that it could have been the ring and pinion in the rear end, I am wondering if it could have even been the linkage to the tranny since the shifting lever seems to have a lot of play in it. Have any of you all had this happen, or have any idea's what it could be. Thanks for your help.
BTW I am not much of a mechanic, especially when it comes to tranny's and TC's and axles, but I can learn, and realize that I am going to need to.

For the rear axlle too do that it would need to be mmissing a tooth, in which case you would notice it quite often, and it wouldent take long for it to blow all the way. So I dont think it would be the differencial.
You are correct in that the chain in the t-case is only used when you are in 4wd. So it shouldent be that, but I am not a 229 expert.
Its quite possible its the tranny, but I am not a 727 expert either ;)
But...I doubt its the differencial

Thanks Stuka, It's nice to rule that out. I talked to a friend of mine who is a mechanic, and he thinks it might be the tranny, he asked me about the fluid level, I had not checked that yet, since it was just changed a few hundred miles ago and I had not seen any signs of leaking. He told me if it wasn't leaking it must need fluid; because all GW's leak. lol Anyway, I will check the tranny fluid and see if that could be it.

Low tranny fluid would definately do this to you. However, I also had a slipping problem that was the transfer case(229). It ended up being a sliding clutch which was screwed up. The slipping was accomponied by a nasty grinding sound. The slipping due to low tranny fluid doesn't make a grinding sound, at least in my GW.

OK, I checked the fluid and it is low, quite low I might add, so I am going to get a quart right after work and fill it up, and check it VERY FREQUENTLY from now on, my mechanic must be right it is leaking. Any preferences on type of fluid. It is a Chysler tranny so it should take Dextron, but is any brand better than any other? Thanks for your help.

I guess I am Mondo, who would have thunk it something so simple as FLUID LEVEL. I have to apologize to you all for not checking this out first  . I hope you all can look past this simple newbie mistake. redface.gif
btw I was pretty much sure it was going to need a rebuild. So Mondo was pretty much right on. redface.gif
