And for the second question today...I am thinking of putting Lock-Right Lockers, front and rear on my '88 Grand Wagoneer. Has anyone installed these? How do you feel about them? I'm on a very low budget and was recommended these highly. What other alternatives are there and how tough is it to install lockers? My mechanincal skill level goes as far as changing a timing chain successfully. ( I have no choice but to do the worl myself and I want to anyway)
Thanks again!

You might not want to install a locker in the front. From what others here have said, a locked front absolutely kills your turning radius. The rear should be okay, though.

Do a search on Lockers, there is another current thread going with an excellent set of observations by people that have lockers installed on both ends.

if you have either hubs in the front, or a selectable locker in the front, it will not afect your steering.

Lockrights are easy to put in. Just don't go running tires over 33" or it will void the warranty. I could be wrong on the tire size, someone could check and let you know. In the front, it should be OK as long as you've got the manual hubs.

They are very easy to install as long as your gearing is not too low. If you have a D44 and 3.07 gears, there is no problem since you don't have to remove the ring gear. I put a Powertrax No-Slip in my TJ with D44 and 3.73 gears, but had to remove the ring gear because it blocked the removal of the pinion, so it was a little more work.
I'd stay away from putting one in the front unless you really do hard core off-road.

front d44 with 3.31's in an 86 requires unbolting the carrier, can't get the shaft past the gear without dismantling.

For the ffront if you really want one go with a powerlock or ARB. As a full time locker makes it so you cannt not turn in 4wd at all hardly...and you wont be able to drive in snow without being VERY familiar with your rig.
My uncle has a detroit rear and a power lock front...you can still turn it (76 CJ5). The powerlock loccks whenn you apply power to it...otherwise it loosens up. (its a 1.5way LSD)

Blowing my own horn here but I have this posted on the For Sale Section:
The Camo Cow is getting 4.56 R&P on Monday the 17th of June. It has D44's front and rear of course with 3.54 R&P now with a Detroit Locker in the rear and an ARB Locker in the front. Because I have to go to the larger carrier I have to buy all new parts. Because of this the Detroit and the ARB will be available with the 3.54 R&P. They have few miles on them and were professionally installed (and removed) by KONGS 4X4 here in Phoenix. You know what they cost new so I will let them go (singularly or together) to the best offer. You can e-mail me off-line or on as the spirit moves you. I would like to see approx. $475 for the Detroit and $575 for the ARB which will have everything needed to hook it up including the solenoid. This includes the R&P of course.
