Anybody ever mounted an NP435 in a J-truck? I have read the Novak site which details the swap for a T-176. My 4-speed is listed as a T-177 with a longer input shaft. I am in the gathering-parts stage. What else do i need besides the pilot bushing?
Take your bellhousing and bolt it straight to the Ford NP435. Use a Ford clutch disc and swap in a custom AA/Novak pilot bushing. I have one on my 401 with a 203/205 doubler.
Anything else I should know? What type of clutch to use?

I just did this last month.

I had an issue with the clutch because I bought an 11" Ford truck clutch. It looked like it would fit, but it did not. Ended up grinding it down a touch. Make sure your diameter is smaller, I think it is a Mustang 10.5".

The second problem I had with my clutch, and this one I still can not figure out, is that it would not disengage. I ended up fixing it by flipping it around so that the "this side toward flywheel" side was toward the rear. I think that the input shaft sleeve was pressing against the clutch disk, but I am not sure.

After that I added a 203/205 and some custom x-members.

This one was to a 258, but most of it should apply here to a 360 as well:
"
All of this will apply to using a ford transmission and trasnfer case
I did keep the original bellhousing with no extra drilling.the clutch linkage is all from the 176 since I kept the 176 bellhousing all of the linkage and clutch fork work as original. You will need to change clutch disk. The 176 uses a 1 1/8 10 spline 10 1/2 inch disk. You will need a 1 1/16 10 spline 10 1/2 inch disk. You can get this from summit or any other parts source.Look for 1 from a cj with a T18 or I think a mustange 5.0 with a 5 speed. You will need a new pilot bearing from novak or advanced adapters. I used Novak and had good service.I got the original transmission mount and transfer case mount.I used these to mount the transmission to the crossmember.I also used the ford transfer case mount to attach to the frame. On the tranny mount it is 2 part the bottom that attaches to the crossmember and the top that attaches to the tranny.I simply welded the bottom part to my J10 crossmember.I also had to move the crossmember down and back.To move it down I welded angle to the frame with a hole drilled in it for the crossmember bolt.I also had to use and change the ford transfer case shifter.I drilled a new hole about 1/2 inch farther back on the plat that it goes thru on the Tcase linkage.this let the lever move forward away from the seat.I also heated and bentr the tranny shifter away from the steering wheel just a little. You will also need to have the driveshatfs cut. The front will have to be lengthened and the rear shortened.
All in all it wasnt near as bad as it sounds. The results are great. You get a very strong setup with a granny low first.
When you get the 435 and 205 make sure to get both shifters and all the mounts.
Oh almost forgot keep the yoke for your front driveshaft from you 208.You can knock the big ring off it and use it in the 205 for the front shaft so yo can keep your cv.You will have to get a new seal for the Tcase to do this and if I remember right it is the same seal for the front of the 208 ,but dont quote me on that. For the rear you can get a ujoint with 2 different sizes that will fit.
Hope this helps.."
