I've searched the world over for a NOS J Truck plastic gas filler bezel... like trying to find the Hope Diamond....all used up.
How many people would be interested in a Reproduction plastic Bezel ?
Probably cost less than 25 bucks...shipped.
Need to get 50 pre-sold.
Wouldn't have the "Unleaded Fuel Only" engraved like OEM, but there is guy already making decals for CJ that say that.

What material will they be made out of HDPE or Polypropylene?
You going to make any improvements to the design, i.e. strengthening the corners around screw holes so they don't split like the originals did?
What kind of mold?
Injection molded?
I'm interested mine is cracked.

Due to the very limited market for FSJ parts....
The reproduction will be same as CJ, but without ANY holes drilled in bezel.
So no improvements will be made.
I suggest buying several as spares if your're worried about them aging and cracking like the OEM ones did from being bent to fit bedsides.
I think this is going to be our ONE AND ONLY answer....
If there is enough interest Zack at Z&M Jeeps may run with it.

If I decide to make these, they WILL have the correct holes in them for the FSJ on the outside edge. You have to understand, without the CJ one to start from, these never get made...

cool... Already 15-20 spoken for.
Maybe this will happen! With IFSJA's help...
I search super hard for NOS...but if I found a 30 year old plastic gas filler part...bet it would be hard and not pliable...so would crack upon installation.
This is one of the ... Repro's are better than OEM .

:dancingbanana: Cool :) we keep this up and this may come to reality.
The price each will certainly go down when you combine shipping.
They don't weigh much and can fit inside each other, so won't take much larger box for several either.
I don't imagine that once the 50 are made that there is enough interest out there to ever get another batch made up.
So guess consider these a limited production reproduction. :D
The more I type and think about it, I'm increasing my order also.

(please pick something better than the original material...hopefully something that can flex just enough to fit the bed contour without as much strain as the originals)

I have a NOS plastic filler bezel which I installed on my CJ-8.
Package was dated MFG. 85
As 2toneblue eluded to... the OEM black plastic is made from hard material.
I took a reproduction bezel off CJ-8 and it is slightly more flexible than OEM.
I dunno if it's age of plastic or if there wasn't as much plastic technology in 80's ..... Or combination of both.
These " J Truck bezels " are CJ reproduction with J Truck mounting pattern.
What I do know is these bezels are our only shot of getting new ones.
As U can see from this thread we're having hard time getting 25 pre-orders....

By my count looking through this thread, it looks like we might be close. So now is the time. Let's do this.

For those who are not sure, this is for 78-87 Jtrucks - not the same for the Cherks and Wags.
They wern't all black either - the white trucks had white bezels in the earlier productions 78 - ? years also.

It's looking like this ain't happening.
So i'm going to go this route to get one.
Buy 2 of the reproduction ones for CJs with 3 holes in them($8.99 ea. at 4WD Hardware by Omix-Ada) Heres a pic of the reproduction part.
http://i49.tinypic.com/2z7hojn.jpg
I'm going to use one as a sacrafical part to get the same plastic welding material to fill in the holes on the other. I'll fill the holes to be little above the flange and then trim them down with an exacto knife so that their flush with the surface. From the apearance of the reproduction part shown above the mold didn't have a very highly polished finish like the originals have, so I'll try to flame the visible surfaces to get a glossy finish and blend in the welds.
I have some experience welding polypropylene and the welds do lose some of there flexability and I'm not sure what material the repros are made of or how it will react to welding.
I figure if doesn't work I'm only out about $25. What you guys think? Any tips?
red mistress
02-12-2010, 07:28 PM
the reproduction CJ fillers are made from "softer plastic".
Which I am thinking will be better for the curve of the townside bed.
Good observation on OEM being more "glossy" finish.
It's pitiful that we can't get enough preorders to get gas fillers reproduced.

Well I checked into making them and having them made, making them from scratch was cost prohibitive.
There is not enough demand for them to cover the cost of getting a mold made.

I found one in pretty nice shape. Took awhile.
http://i28.tinypic.com/2n00xvo.jpg
Also solid modeled some. Flat like the original ones and curved to fit the bed. Also too cost prohibitive to reproduce in the US, not so much in China, but the langauge barrier and lack of recourse if somethings not right with the mold or parts.

Hey Dennis! Thats a used one I found or should I say lucked into :D , not NOS. No touch up job on the letters. They are the original hot stamped letters...only letter thats not quit perfect is the tail on the letter "Y". I also learned the reason that Jeep didn't made those curved to fit the rounded bedsides, it was because back when they were made, curved surfaces couldn't be hot stamped as easily as today. Please don't ask how I learned that one.
Dennis you could always show up at Jeff Daniels Show... your Scramber would surely win the CJ-8 class.
You could probably pry the bezel off the at that show while I'm not lookin.:D :D :D

Will not fit a GW only J trucks. I messed with getting a mold made...it was gonna cost around 10K. Even looked at it with the mounting flange curved to fit the bed side contour so the holes wouldn't crack as easy, that mold cost was gonna be much more. I couldn't sell enough of them in a hundred years to pay off that kind of cost.

What about having them made of sheet metal instead, and just having a rubber grommet between the cab and bed? I'd imagine the fabrication costs would be far less than a plastic mold, and it'd be more durable, especially once powder coated. (Here's those chartreuse and white ones y'all want! :p)
Since the outer "trim ring" would be a separate part welded on, I'd imagine having the UNLEADED FUEL ONLY machined or somehow added into the ring wouldn't terribly increase the cost, and could even be made into an option for extra $.

I've seen the existing aftermarket sheet metal ones for CJs, I was kind of going for very close to OEM.
(I always got a kick out of seeing the ricers all trashed up with pink, purple, and chartreuse stuff in the boneyards that some guy had visions of grandeur with!) :D
