Its hard to tow anything if you disconnect, the engine will just spin. Sorry http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/wink.gif
Here is what the 1985 Operator's Manual sez:
With Automatic Transmission and Slec-Trac
When the transfer case range lever is in neutral position both axles are disconected from the powertrain. This allows the vehicle to be towed without removing the propeller shafts.
1. With the vehicle moving slowly (2-3 mph), shift the transmission to the Neutral position.
2. Using a firm, positive hand movement, shift the range selector lever to the Neutral postion.
3. Turn the ignition key to the unlocked off position.
4. Shift the automatic tranmission into Park.
5. Connect the vehicle to the tow vehicle.
What I don't know is if you can do that with the motor blown...

does the 2wd-4wd vaccum switch need to be in the 4wd mode when you switch the tc into neutral?

BNJNZ, Yes
With the 229, you must put it into 4wd before you can move the floor lever.
I don't have any experience towing my GW but, I wonder if the floor lever will flop around a little on a bumpy road causing the gears to grind. Just a thought

You don't have to remove the shafts.
The NP229 has a neutral position. You can tow these trucks any way you want to as long as the transfer is in the neutral position. Front lifted, rear lifted, on flat bed or all wheels on the hard top. So "nograin" is correct it will work if the engine dosen't start.
The vac switch dosen't need to be in the 4wd posiiton to go into neutral, only if you were going to put it into 4wheel low. It will move into the neutral when left in the 2wd mode.
