What is involved with replacing the inside door handle mechanism?

The splines on one of mine are stripped so I guess I am going to have to replace it.

Thanks.

HI BILLYBOB, Are you sure it is the mechanism that is stripped? Usually, the handle strips first, just a thought. John

Just grabbed one from the Junkyard. Here it is:

With the window rolled up, undo the 3-4 screws surrounding the door handle shaft. push the shaft into the door and it will klunk to the bottom of the door.

It will hang from a metal strap about 2 feet long. The upper (hard to reach) end of that strap has a washer/spring machanism at the end. Compress the spring/washer thingy and push up on the strap and out she comes.

It works a lot like the screw slot things on the back of wall clocks.

It isn't hard, just dificult to get to. If you are lucky, you'll find a jeep with the front windows broken out.

Yeah, what he said.

Just make sure that if you buy one from somebody you get the correct handle for the door that you are trying to fix. The left and right side *look* identical, but the spring is reversed.

I will prolly go pull one this week from the local boneyard. There is a waggy there that has the door and window all torn apart where they pulled a vent window for me.

Is there any difference between the years or power vs manual locks and windows?
