would like opinions on whether or not $300.00 is too much to pay for transfer case seal replacement. this is the going price in my area. i have the skills, but seem to lack the time. but if it's a three hour job, i may reconsider. any input from those who have done it much appreciated
1989 gw with 228 tc thanks, steve

Last tcase seal I changed was in a Chevy CUCV military 1.25 ton truck. Took less than an hour. Piece of cake. It was the front one. Undid the front shaft at the tcase, zipped off the yoke with an air ratchet, popped out the seal, drove the new one in, torques the yoke back on and buttoned up the driveshaft. No big deal at all.
$300 would easily buy you a NP208 tcase.
I vote DIY.
Just did this. If you need to do an output shaft seal, it's no problem. You need a 1 1/8"(I think that's the size) socket to get the yokes off. W/ a centerpunch you can bang the seals out w/out damaging the case. Make sure you get CR or National seals.
If you need to do the input shaft seal, it's a pain and $300 doesn't sound too bad. I did it on my own and I wouldn't recommend r/r the t/case alone.

Wow I think thats a lot, but I have never taken anything into a shop to have it done. For 300.00 I think I would make time. ;) ;)

I had mine done with a rear seal, new oil pan, new oil pan gasket, oil, ATF, State inspection all for about 300 plus tax. It was the rear output shaft seal

Wow. At the going rate in my area 300 would get you more than a transfer case seal.
Ive done the rear, as already mentioned its a straight forward easy job. The front I have not done but is the same process and because of access may take a little extra time. Have at it.
Don't forget to speedi sleeve if you have bad wear on the shaft which you probably will. In fact it doesnt do any harm to sleeve it if you are not sure.
Hope that price includes lube, tranny oil change, grease up and perhaps an alignment check whilst their at it. :D

Are any of these seals better than others? My rear output shaft seal leaked. I replaced it, still leaks.

Chero77, how badly worn was the shaft surface itself when you fixed it? Groove that you could easily catch a finger nail on? If so try a speedi sleeve.
Secoundly after the fix is it leaking from the outer seal or is it coming from what would appear to be the inside area of the universal joint?

Why not have a friend over one Saturday to help with the heaving and d.i.y. The seals themselves can be had for $4-$6 each. If you buy a pre-cut gasket, maybe another $6. Your price is all labor.
At the very least, the price sounds pretty high for the job.
Nobby, what's speedi sleeve? I've never heard of it, probably because I'm just a driveway knuckle buster. Also, who sells the CR or Nat'l seals? I have the same problem of a leaking rear output seal and have been putting it off. Guess the timing of this post is telling me something.

Pulling the x-case is relatively easy, especially with two people (though so far I've had install two of them by myself). Drain the x-case first! Unbolt the x-case end of the driveshafts (8 bolts), unhook the vent line, unhook the shift linkage, unbolt the speedo cable, unbolt the x-case from the tranny (6 bolts), slide the x-case off the out-put shaft (it's a good 80#s so be careful).
I don't think I've forgotten anything...
Installation is just the reverse.
