I am sitting at a stoplight and I hear a "ting ting" noise...soundl like something is rubbing againest the fan.......the sound then goes away.....then my belts start squeeking....I get home and notice that the top alternator bolt is broken!....it always seemed to be mounted a little crooked......and it just didn't seem right..seems like I am missing something.....???? hhmm any insight would be appreciated!

yeah, Bign Blue posted something similar about a month ago.the top bolt had sheared off where it is threaded into the front of the head.

Hey Bart there is a trick to that top bolt! The trick is to use a little lock tite on the threads and leave her semi loose. I have broken several before I tried this and now it works great.

I have been luckey and never broke one but I do use anti sieze on the bolt and I run a much heavier alternator than most anyone else. Size wise my alt is 2.5 times bigger than stock.

I believe you are missing the sleeve that should be on the inside of the bracket but I could be wrong?

Recently putting my 88 back together I had a small, about 4 or 5 inch bracket left over i had trouble figuring where to go. It mounts horizontal from the big bracket to in between the sleeve and the back of the alternator. Once I figured it out I could see where it really supports the long alt bolt, about halfway down it's shaft. My alt would go on without it and worked ok, I could see it was Just about 1/4 inch from lining directly up, I checked with one other Wag owner I know (trying to get him on here BTW) and he had the same trouble until he figured it out, and I'm wondering if it's common to "loose" the short bracket.

Forgot to add also, the adjusting bracket goes behind the bolt hole with the bolt going in from the back, I don't know how they all are but mine was easy to do wrong, in front, andI noticed it "cocked" the alt a little. Definatly taking "before" picture from now on.
