Anybody out there know of an easier way to remove the wood grain after it has faded and cracked up from the sun?
Used a heat gun and putty knife and it took me three hours to get half the tailgate done. No luck with acetone and WD40.
Am I stuck with a very time consuming project?
I think you're stuck with the way you're going except I'd use a plastic bondo spatula over a putty knife. I've used 3M Decal and something remover on 1-3 inch stripes and it worked well but messy. But on something as large as panels the stuff would run you a small fortune and I doubt it's any faster considering clean up etc. Old brittle shelf paper is worse than newer but if you hussle you ought to be done by the close of next weekend. http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/wink.gif
There are some bodywork folks on here though that may have a name of some secret sauce that would help but I sure don't know any other way.
Keep at it...the results will be worth it to get that tackey looking shelf paper off an otherwise fine looking rig.

There is no easy way to do it. I am still tryong to get the residue off from the moldings that surrounded the 'wood'. It took me about 5 hours to get all the "wood" off. I used a a hair dryer and thick leather gloves to slooooowly pull it off. Once you get a corner up heat the sticker up with the blow dryer nice and hot and peel it off. I have tried.
1 Acetone.
2 Finger nail polish remover.
3 Tile Adhesive remover.
4 Special bumper sticker remover.
There is no quick way to do it.
Good luck

Thanks for the replies, I might look into the 3M disk idea.
91GWag: You are lucky that you could actually grasp enough vinyl to peel. Mine is in such poor shape (cracked) that the largest piece that will come up is the size of a crumb and then it separates.
I read a few posts from back a while and saw a recommendation to get a 30 pack of beer and be patient. I think I'll pick up a few 30 packs.

Well mine came off in about an hour with a heatgun but I can see where it would really be a pain if it were all cracked like you say and not allowing you to pull off big pieces..
Now I did have an old buddy that did body work forever.. He told me that he used to use heavy duty easyoff oven cleaner. only thing is this will remove all the paint down to bare metal.. hehee
But, if you are repainting .. mabye this is an option hehehe

I think I'll just stick with the hard way. The paint underneath is in pristine condition. Every little bit I get off, the better the Jeep looks.
I did find that a razor blade, used gently, does pretty well after heating an area up.
